A thought occurred to me today during my downtime at work and I wondered what's the best way to get my in-game weapons? I've played numerous games throughout the years each with a different way of delivering instruments of death. Whether it be hand to you at a given time like in doom or through hours of exploration such as in Symphony of the Night.

Personally I prefer the latter because I feel it gives me a better sense of accomplishment than just having it hovering in front of me when I start a new level. So now I wonder, just does everyone else like to find them?

I like ones I've made myself. I always love crafting systems. Gives a sense of achievement swinging a sword I forged myself.

Depends on what game I'm playing. If it's a war game, I like to run over a corpse and get a new gun. If it's something like Bioshock, I like being near death and almost out of ammo, just to walk into a room and see a grenade launcher leaning against a wall.

I prefer just to be given your weapons. Then again I dislike RPGs, so I've never been one for exploring.

I like it in HL2 where finding the weapon is built into the gameplay. But I also liked how in HL2 getting a weapon didn't seem arbitrary; it made sense to the plot and setting.

I like to find them as drop items after defeating some seriously insane boss.

That way i can almost always be sure it'll be a good weapon and i can carry some snese of accomplishment with me rather than just buying it.

I prefer the Diablo finding system; beating an enemy that uses said weapon.

Although the best one is a weapon that morphs into different and more powerful forms. I remember this one game on the original Xbox where you found something like powerups while exploring the game world, and every 5 of them upgraded your main weapon into a more badass weapon. For instance, the Dwarf I had used a sledgehammer as his main weapon, and it would continually upgrade into more powerful and cooler looking sledgehammers. That's probably the best weapon "finding" system.

the prince of persia weapon system didn't work bad (1st and 2nd one), although i do like the idea have doing certain achievement or how you handle a situation can turn your weapon into something even more badass depending on your character/special abilities you choose.

Fired at me magically and impaling me through my chest therefore pinning me to the floor so I have to lift myself up off of it.

Pretty obvious reference right there :3

I like looting corpses to find weapons. It's less in-game currency i have to spend buying weapons which leaves more available for health items.

Corpse looting. It just gives me the feeling that I had to actually do something to get the weapon. Kill a grunt get a less than impressive weapon, kill a boss get their signiture slayer. A bit of a megaman hybrid system is my ideal for getting weapons.

I like finding weapons, but I also like the Fallout 3 method of then having to maintain them, because it conjures up this brilliant image for me of shotguns held together with duct tape and prayer, while you scurry from fight to fight hoping they won't break into pieces. It's a really clever way of integrating narrative into gameplay.

Of course, given the choice I'd like a system like Guitar Hero for weapons games. A workbench where you can literally stick together all different parts from all different weapons to make the best possible.

Exploration is good, as is good old fashioned looting. And it helps when the weapon you get makes sense based on the enemy you kill to get it.

One way I hate getting new weapons is when it's an obvious element of being part of the game. In something like Halo I totally get why someone would give me a sniper rifle before heading into an area where I'll need to snipe. That just makes sense logic wise and game wise. What doesn't make sense is when you just happen to stumble across "the one and only gun of magic wall destroying" right before you find walls that need to be destroyed with it.

I like to get my weapons one way and one way only.
