A Hermit's Cave
Good evening, Escapist. You find me in a rather contemplative mood, tonight (this 'man-card' business got me thinking a little too much - about 'sex vs lovemaking' of all things).

Anyway, having read the 'the nod' thread, there was a lot of 'brofisting' going on, but no real 'handshakes'. The word only appeared twice on the first page...

So, when greeting friends, do you shake hands? If yes, how?

Me? I'm a 'real' man, so I give manly handshakes (i.e. firm grip for two or three seconds but wait for the other person to loosen before letting go).

I also do it in the manly way (though I am a woman). When I meet new people and if I chat with them for longer than a moment and notice we might hit it off I will offer my hand to introduce myself. I've been taught to do this ever since I was a child but apparently some people think it's a way of saying, "I wanna have sex with you, now!"... Which is doesn't... Cultural differences.

Grab, squeeze, shake, release. Firm enough to show you're not a little *****, gentle enough so it doesn't seem like you're tryin to start shit.

Too many people don't wash their hands after using the washroom...as such I do not initiate handshakes. However, I will not be so rude as to turn down a handshake either, suffering all the potential grossness that comes with it.

One of my old roommates would shake hands with as limp and dead a hand as possible. This was both uncomfortable and awkward. Thus it has become my favorite non-business oriented handshake technique.

With my left hand. Carryover from Boy Scouts.

As for grip, firm but not crushing, unless I feel like tourmenting someone.

Sudden thought: have you ever had your hand kissed? (Apologies, question to all women...) And how would you react?

Don't think I've ever seen it done (except for jokes between friends) let alone done it myself.

One of my friends did it once, and I warned him never to do it again. I don't want random dudes kissing any part of me, it's just creepy. If someone I just met tried to do it i'd pull my hand away, politness be damned.

Anyways I go with a quick, firm hand shake.

Hmm, my hand has been kissed actually. But I already knew him through a friend and I really can't remember anymore what the occasion was. It was nice though. :) But my reaction really depends on the person, to be quite honest.

Firm and fast, but really, actually a bit too fast. 1-2 good pumps is the ideal, and i tend to go a little hyperactive. Been trying to tone it down a bit.

Also, feel free to read as many double entendres into this as you would like.

I shake a friend's hand when I greet him, my grandfather's hand when I greet and say goodbye, and I shake a woman's or a man's hand when it's business. Firm handshake. Anything less reflects poorly on myself.

I shake hands like a man. Unless you hold on for too long, then I'll start to stoke your forearm with my pointer finger.

Given you're username, why do I not find that surprising? (No disrespect intended...) ^_^

I use my penis.
And why can't I imagine this any other way than 'going wrong'? -_-
Because you aren't imaginative enough.

When I meet someone new I state my name, they say theirs, and then comes the quick but yet firm handshake.

As long as you're reason for not being suprised has nothing to do with that awful tv show "Ladette to Lady" then it's fine. If it is........

Surely the Scouts would have had you learn to shake with the right hand? That's where I learned about the tradition.

OT: With the right hand, and make it firm, but not aggressive. A proper handshake.
