I've seen games being less and less linear now, and almost only sandbox. I can understand that having a free world to explore can be fun, but for us who doesn't like that sort of experience are kind of on the short straw in these days.

I've got a PS3 and the only good linear games right now is Uncharted, R&C and Bioshock, but that's a short list and none of them have any real replay value.

Linear games tend to be bigger on storyline, and I like that occasionally. It depends on the game, to be honest...

Half-life 1 and 2 were both linear, and both rocked the gaming world.

As Chipperz said, they usually have better stories and better scripted events; if you're forced down a dark alley and there's no other path, you're forced to be scared.

I don't mind them linear, but I also love sandbox games.

Linear games are just as good as sandbox as far as I am concerned. It depends on the game and their developers.

yea there's nothing wrong with them

its when there's attempted non linear games that end up in a linear game with two ends and you start in the middle

its rather annoying

I don't mind linear games as long as it's well-structured and lengthy. I don't want to just charge through five-minute long levels consisting of narrow hallways and be done with it. Linear doesn't have to mean the levels have to be small.

I don't know, I saw Bioshock as a cross between linear and open-world, since the level designs were pretty expansive and encouraged exploration, even though the ultimate goal was to make it to the next area.

I very much prefer non-linear games. Probably the reason why RPGs are still my favorite genre. If a game isn't linear you can always leave the part that's pissing you off and come back later, whereas in a linear game you just have to fight your way through it, and I have a somewhat low frustration tolerance.

Linear works for some games, like FPS, but then sandbox works for FPS as well.

I don't mind, so long as I'm having fun while going down a linear path.

I'm fine with linear games; personally I find a good story is superior to a large but bland world (Fallout 3). There's also the fact that linear games, if done well, can be much more enjoyable than an open-world game - the player doesn't have to make their own fun.

I actually prefer a linear game with attention to detail than a bland free-roaming one
