The most used weapon below the firearm was usually crafted from Solid metal. How much do you think they weighed? I know, but most people dont.

I remember when I was a little kid, one of my mom's boyfriends had a collection of old medieval swords, and they all weighed around 50-60 lbs. And these were actual swords from back then. Hundreds of years old.

Then why are you asking? Couldn't the people who don't know just look it up? This is the Internet after all.

I know what you mean, It's just something most people dont look up. I'm trying to not be super self-righteous here. I think I'm failing...

I kinda want to slap all the people who said 55-65 lbs. Seriously? How long do you think somebody could swing something like that around? 15lbs would be pushing it on the heavy end. You have to be able to do more than swing a single chop that takes you 5 seconds to heave.

And for the record a Viking long sword could way upto 50 pounds

No kind of sane weight is not on this poll, so I'm not responding.

15lb would be more than even the largest battlefield swords. Even a large Zweihander would be barely pushing 7lb. Ceremonial Zweihanders might reach that much, but they weren't designed for battlefield use, and they were a great deal more blinged out than "real" swords.

Good job to everyone who said less than 15 lbs. The combined leverage and weight of a sword that weighed 50 lbs would be like trying to swing around a plasma TV, it wouldnt work. even the scottish claymores would only weigh 8 lbs at most. Ceremonial swords would be the heaviest, at 12-15 lbs. Even NORMAN BATTLE AXES only went up to 10 lbs and theyre collossal. The heaviest weapons of all would be the hammers, and even those weighed only 12 lbs. Next time you want to swing a sword around, find a crowbar, because thats pretty close.

Do you even know how much 50lb of steel is? If you had a 50lb steel sword it would be twenty fucking metres long.

Seriously, don't just pull things out of your ass, all you get doing that is shit.

Just to give you an idea of what a fifty pound sword really means, Cloud's buster sword from Final Fantasy VII, made of steel, would still only weigh 20lb. (Assuming the blade is 5' long, 9" deep, and an inch thick, and ignoring the taper).

Have you ever seen one of these? beter yet have you ever held one? They're fucking HEAVY! The one I've seen held was 4 feet long! So yes they could be that heavy. I would post a picture if i knew how to post pictures.

Maybe to your noodle arms, but a 4' sword would only be about 3lbs or so.

So far in my experience (with viking swords and medieval swords) not one I have hefted has weighed more than 2kg (roughly 4 lbs). I have not tried to lift a zweihander or a large claymore but 7lbs sounds like the right weight.
