By some freak event you have become rich. I don't know maybe you struck oil in your backyard or something but that doesn't really matter, what matters is that you now have more money than you know what to do with say $10 000 000 000.

These are my questions:
How much would you give away, if any?
Do you feel it is right that society will expect you to give away a large sum of money?
do you think it is right that your children might be expected to give money to others sheerly because they have it?
and if they don't is it right that they will be viewed as greedy by their peers?

Your turn.

due to epic newbyness (fucked up enter button) i have made me some mirror threads please disregard this one and go to this one http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.156671

I'd give up more than the poll options are for. For one thing, it's way more money than I will ever need in my life, and for another thing, why not put it to good use and help humanity prosper?
Also, I care not what society thinks, I would give the money away because I want to, not because of some obligation.
As for my children... I don't think I have to worry about that.

I'd probably give away 1/10th, that'll keep everyone happy.

Also, a triple thread? =P

Around 10,000 dollars. Just because I have a kind heart.

I dunno really.

Probably not, but again not really sure.

Its not right, but sadly thats probably how they will be seen.

I'm no philanthropist, so probably not much.

I would tend to help out the people I see, which I guess is why I always give the beggars coins in games.

I'd parcel out alot of cash to my closer family members and friends. Let's say It's safe to say that alot of my friends would be getting a free ride.

Nope not to charity and quite frankly I'm tired of all this "we must help those that can't help themselves" bullshit, if they can't help themselves OR get help from family and/or friends they don't deserve it.

On the other hand I would donate a large sum to some research projects, even setting up some sort of a grant thingamajic.

I would invest in basic infrastructure projects in africa, hiring and training locals to build water filtration plants, hospitals and the like. I'd also start my own space program.

So I guess that falls under none, but it isn't exactly uncharitable.

Well to date ive given about 10k(est)? I dont know, they take it out of my bank account every month...and i have about 4 charities for various things. Yes i know its only to make myself feel better but honestly im tired of running 5k every time, just take the money already. Its cool with me, girlfriends are 10 times more expensive so...somehow in my weird logic im all for giving.
Where have you been?

OP: I would only give to a charity that I know would not squander the resources on trivial things and would make my money have an actual impact, but I wouldn't give away a fortune.

For those of you who know that I like Objectivism and want to call me on this, Objectivism is not directly opposed to charity as long as it is your wish to give to that charity and you are not being forced to give.

There was a quote from Atlas Shrugged that was something like, "Giving money to a family member only because he is family is a sacrifice, giving money to a friend that you respect is not." I'm just paraphrasing so you get the jist of what I'm saying.

I'm a minimalist, and $10 billion is A LOT. I would probably give away a lot of it.
