"If" Sony decided to create a retail emulator for the PS3 that would emulate the hardware of a PS2 allowing you to play PS2 games you already own and maybe even purchase PS2 games off the Playstation Store, how much would you be willing to pay for it?

I personally would pay $60 max. I would love some backwards compatibility on my PS3, plus being able to buy PS2 games on the Playstation Store would be awesome.

I would say $50-$70. That's about the price of a game and I'm basing it off the fact that the GameBoy Player for the GameCube cost about as much as a game (at the time).

Well, I still have my PS2, so while it would be nice, it's also completely unnecessary for me.

I demand it for free! I don't care how much it would be worth, I would force them to sell it for free!

I would not pay for an emulator. That's like paying for a torrent tracker.

Besides, I doubt a PS3 would have the power to emulate a PS2 to a playable standard. On PC, PS2 emulators require very high specs to run close to 100% speed during action.
Really? Because the BC 80GB model runs an emulator, and I have yet to experience a problem with any of my ps2 games.

I'd really only be interested in it for Okami so I don't think I'd pay for it. If there were more games I wanted to play perhaps I might.

I'm sad that I missed the first PS3's that did run PS2 games, that would have been sweet.
However they should only release a free (or mini charge of say $10 to 20) firmware emulator once PS2 has completely run its course.

The we don't want ppl buying the cheap ass version of new games we are promoting do we? corporate model, as much as I ***** about it, does make sense, so reintroducing full backwards cap is probably not even on the radar.

Of course more money would be just be made by re-release more PS2 titles with better compatiblity and hopefully remaster for the new era (kind of missed that point with Marvel vs Capcom 2 re-release, but hey at least it has online for real), not bad for $15 for what once was a quite expensive game.
Of course this will fit the mirco-transaction model as well, and usher in a new virtual arcade (you want to play this PS2 game, sure $0.50 an hour and monthly fee to access the area). Its coming and kind of already here (Xbox points to play old 80's acrade games just to get your name on leaderboards...really, even for ones considered abandonware and totally legal for you get off the net for free? wow).

IF you really are desperate Best Buy still sells new PS2 consoles for about as much as MW2 or Bayonetta if your old system crashed.

But I do think I think PS3 sales are fianlly good enough, that ...sniff...the PS2 is finally ready to take its long walk into history, and that Sony spends its time and resources to ensure the lifespan of the PS3, especially online support for users and content providers.

There is no reason why the newer models shouldn't have BC, the cost is negligible, they only removed it because they have a large back-stock of PS2's they want to keep selling. If Sony said tomorrow that the PS3's would be fully backwards compatable with both Playstation and Playstation 2 games, their sales would jump.

Not only is my PS3 backwards-compatible (It's the 60-Gig model.), but I have working PS2 and PSX anyway.

Not a penny. The functionality was promised when I purchased my PS3 and it is not there to this day. Plus, I still have a functional PS2 and there isn't a single game on the platform that I am so desperate to play that I'd pay for an emulator to do so.

Don't care, I have a launch 60g model. BC FTW!
*high fives* I think I spent somewhere in the region of two weeks looking for mine, and spent a little more on it than a slim would've cost, however it came with several second-hand games and controllers.

Yeah, me and my buddy got Shadow of the Colossus running the other day. Had to have it at 80% speed (he has a decent rig). Playable, but certainly noticeable.

Maybe the Sony guys engineered a better emulator, or maybe it's just some reverse compatibility. I don't know about software on the triple, only a bit about hardware.
All I know is 80GB's don't have the Emotion Engine inside. they have an emulator. An emulator that works really, really well. I'm just saying, don't underestimate what the PS3 is capable of.
