I'm sad that I missed the first PS3's that did run PS2 games, that would have been sweet.
However they should only release a free (or mini charge of say $10 to 20) firmware emulator once PS2 has completely run its course.
The we don't want ppl buying the cheap ass version of new games we are promoting do we? corporate model, as much as I ***** about it, does make sense, so reintroducing full backwards cap is probably not even on the radar.
Of course more money would be just be made by re-release more PS2 titles with better compatiblity and hopefully remaster for the new era (kind of missed that point with Marvel vs Capcom 2 re-release, but hey at least it has online for real), not bad for $15 for what once was a quite expensive game.
Of course this will fit the mirco-transaction model as well, and usher in a new virtual arcade (you want to play this PS2 game, sure $0.50 an hour and monthly fee to access the area). Its coming and kind of already here (Xbox points to play old 80's acrade games just to get your name on leaderboards...really, even for ones considered abandonware and totally legal for you get off the net for free? wow).
IF you really are desperate Best Buy still sells new PS2 consoles for about as much as MW2 or Bayonetta if your old system crashed.
But I do think I think PS3 sales are fianlly good enough, that ...sniff...the PS2 is finally ready to take its long walk into history, and that Sony spends its time and resources to ensure the lifespan of the PS3, especially online support for users and content providers.
