I'm an engineer. Imperial measurement is crap. It's nowhere near as useful as a simple base 10 numeric system.

'Pass me an 11/15ths socket please...?'

Come to think of it, it's not just distance. Weight also. Grams. So simple. It translates well through from tiny amounts to colossal masses.

Measure temperatures in centigrade. It's so much more practical! 0 deg C, is freezing, 100 deg C is boiling (water @ 1 ATM) If you don't like that, then at least use kelvin.

Surely the American scientific community use metric? Why can't the rest of America just get on board with the rest of the world?

In short, imperial sucks. Let it die.

P.S. I have no problem with the conversational use of imperial units. It's where, I believe we need a standard, global system for engineering and science.

Edit: there you go spell, nazis... happy? I've fixed the odd mistake and typo. BTW C.o.l.o.u.r. :p

I'm an American, but I still think we should switch to metric. It's much simpler than imperial and easier to use.

Because we are America, and we use whatever the fuck we want because we can.
If you disagree you clearly hate freedom and are a communist, socialist, or some evil combination of the two.

Imperial, metric, I can use either. I just wish we would pick one and stick with it. So many different organizations use either metric or imperial. Its quite annoying.

Blame Jimmy Carter for giving up on his plan to convert to the metric system.

Because we spent a hundred years in isolation from the rest of the world and stayed out of the French Revolution, from which the Metric System was created. We do use the Metric system in most forms of science (My Physics teacher would gut you if you tried to measure distance in Miles or Feet.)

Now we just seem to jump back and forth, unable to live without it, but not willing to give up what we already hold custom.

I agree with distance and maybe weight, but I'm keeping temperature. Imperial temperature is much more precise, and you can't argue that it's easier to convert because there's nothing to convert it to.

America uses the metric system for the most part except for miles which are much cooler than kilometers. That's right France I'm calling you out, prove me wrong.

Don't forget about terrorist, because nothing is more evil then a communist, socialist, terrorist who wants to change our awesome American ways. :D

For any kind of scientific calculation, SI is an absolute must. But other than that, I see no issue with imperial, or any other surviving measurements that could be used in some areas (like using pounds for weight, cups/tablespoons for cooking, etc)

There are some things that I would rather use metric for like long distances and weight of objects because it would be a bit easier. Although I would keep temperature in fareinheit because that just makes more sense to me than celsius. Also whenever measuring short distances like peoples' height.

Why chose one or the other when you can have the best of both?

Australia was relatively isolated for 200 years, and has had much of the same European immigration. Although we still have connection to Britain via the Commonwealth, we have had 100% adoption of Metric since the 70s, which the UK seems to have not managed to do. Any nation determined to embrace science and technology completely, probably needs to embrace Metric completely as well. Customs are important, and certainly, some industries hold on to metric, such as habidashery, tailoring and shoe making, etc. Possibly witchcraft as well. ;)

I just don't like the metric system. It's annoying and the measurements mean nothing to me because I was socialized with the imperial system. 2 kilometers means nothing to me. 2 miles however gives me a great picture of how far away something is. Thats why most Americans don't like the metric system and why we as a whole prolly never will use it.
