Just a quick question for all of you guys.
I picked up GTA IV on the release date and well.. I hated it. Thing is, it's far from a bad game.. it's just noting like what I had expected. Little customisation in appearance and cars was a big downer for me.. but was this just because I was expecting something too much like San Andreas?

I made it through half of the story line and put it down, the because of Ps3 the tropies came out "A month?" After the release.. so then I decided to start again, giving up after the first few missions.

Now... Red Dead Redemption.
Should I buy it?

I had the what seems to be common online, decision between Just Cause 2 and RDR.
I bought Just Cause 2 on the basis that I enjoyed Saints row 2 over GTA IV.

That was a mistake, Just cause 2 has too many flaws for me.
Such as, Only one grapple hook at a time, Ropes break WAY too easy.. i mean i can't even stop a small aeroplane from taking off? Even when its travelling at 10mph approaching the runway.
Rico thinks he is spiderman.. However he is not, this makes climbing buildings a frustrating task.. especially when you encounter a building that has a wider top.
Also base jumping.
Not ever little ledge I jump off of do I want to fucking base jump. This makes jumping from a ledge to grapple a building opposite a nightmare as the cross hair automatically points down and you are free falling at what? 200mph off of a 10m ledge.

Also, why when I am pulling up while base jumping does the cross hair face the sky and will refuse to let me see below Rico?
The god damn reason I am pulling up is to get away from the side of the mountain, how am I supposed to know how close I am to the damn thing?
This usually results in a quick look down by not pulling back and slamming into the mountain to be killed... again.

The scenery however, is the best I have seen in a game.
The gameplay is fun, however all missions feel the same.
Also a single Mod on PC solves most of my problems here... This makes the game look Amazingly fun to play..

I'm on Ps3.

Finally, Red Dead Redemption.
It seems to play very similar to GTA IV... however, it looks like it fits very well.
And with it being a totally different genre i have no expectations of previous games of the series.

Please answer according to my preferences and not just because you like the game..
If i hurry and make a choice i can still swap JC2 for RDR free.

You will not get to customize your appearance really unless you go online. And there it is more picking between unlocked charactors. A horse, is a horse of course, of course. Is my take on the variety of horses.

However, if you can get past those two things, I think you would enjoy it. (I have not played JC2 yet.) I also disliked GTA4 due to the whole relationship crap. Along witht he crappy minigames. The minigames in RDR however, I find fun but you can ignore them altogether.

I bought GTA IV and hated it too.

I bought Red Dead Redemption after hearing about how good it was.
To me I felt it was nothing more than GTA in the Wild West. I thought it was similar to Fallout 3. Huge beautiful landscape. But you can easily spend 20 mins there without doing anything or sometimes you'll get about 7 things to do while riding to the next town.

The missions were ok at first but the further I got into the game it just felt samey. Go here and kill this guy, drive this cart and fend off attackers etc.

I was pretty dissapointed. Next day I sold Red Dead (for a profit too.) and got Resident Evil Wii, Infamous and 3D Dot Game Heroes. I'm happier now.

To be honest however. I think you should try and rent the game before trying it? It's always the way to go if you are unsure.

Would it really be all that bad if you bought it?

The worst mistake anyone can make is being too afraid to make one.

Or you could: Flip. A. Coin.

I actually just go and buy the game and take it back after 1-2 weeks to say that i bought it as a present and they already have the game, can I swap it?
Spain has a strange policy.. 15 days return on the game and because iI buy 2nd hand games they are not sealed so I can get away with it.

Their answer is always yet of course, and i can swap my purchased game with another.
I know, I'm a bad boy.
Their fault for charging 70 euros for a new game, even ones up to 4 months old.

I can get over that.
Like I said, because its NOT GTA i don't have the expectations on customisation and i won't be comparing it to an awesome game that is known to be San Andreas.

RDR is not like Just Cause 2. I've only played the demo of the latter, but having played through all of the former's singleplayer missions and a fair bit of its multiplayer, I can tell you that they are very different. RDR is serious. Much like GTA IV is. I get the feeling that JC 2 was mostly blowing shit up for fun.

But you're asking whether you'll like RDR having not enjoyed GTA IV, and I guess my answer would have to be a probably not. If you can give me a better idea of why you didn't like GTA IV, I might be able to make my answer a little more informed...

I didn't really like GTA myself, but I picked up RDR. I do think that there is a different feel between the two games (in RDR you can actually play a good guy, which is awesome :D), but my main gripe with RDR is the protagonist, John "Doormat" Marston, and the utter lack of choice in the main story.

I personally prefer RDR to GTA IV for a...well what some folk would think is a frivolous reason.
The characters are actually amicable and friendly, THAT alone I have not really found in the Libery City setting. People actually say hello to you in game and pressing circle means you can reply in return.

In the beginning of some cutscenes, he'll actually ask them how they are. The guy has manners and a person civility that is way above that of Niko which I actually appreciate in a sandbox game. I can't be the only one tired of gritty realistic miserable characters surely?

Honestly.. It's hard to explain why i didn't like GTA.. The game itself seems great. I just can't bring myself to play it..
Why? It was just a totally different game to what i had expected.
I was ready for a Cheat Filled crazy game, much like San Andreas.
That and that alone stopped me from playing it..
But RDR is totally different, i don't expect it to be anything like San Andreas.
Which would most likely mean that i can enjoy the game for what it is an not because of some stupid thing in my head.

The cowboy scene seems to suit the type of gameplay WAYY better than GTA.

I never meant to say JC2 was similar to RDR.
I bought JC2 because it seemed similar to Saints Row 2

To me Saints row 2 > GTA IV
So i thought..
Just Cause 2 > RDR

Hehe, I got that. Looked around a couple of days then ordered it on play.com, then they spent 5 days packing it! So it arrived 7 days after ordering. Hate weekends.

Yeah I didn't like GTA IV either. I didn't get it on release day, but a few days later. Like others, I think I got halfway through it and just stopped playing it. To me it was a waste of $60 and this marked the last time I bought a game without renting it first. My main gripes with the game were the poor controls, poor story, forgettable characters, and most of all that stupid relationship meter and the cell phone where your friends would call you every 2 minutes to do something; it was cool at first, but it got boring and annoying real quick. I could turn the cell phone off, but somehow it always turned back on for some reason.

Anyway I have been seeing the commercials for RDR, at first I wasn't interested, but the more I see them, I'm starting to become interested. I'm probably going to at least rent it to see what all the hype is about.

I'm rapidly growing tired of Waky Destruction games..
They seem to base the whole game around blowing stuff up, making every mission feel the same.

Most of my time on JC2 isn't spent on having fun, it's searching for that last fucking tower or generator to achieve 100% base destroyed.

Maybe its time for a serious game.

I dunno, it's a bit of a gamble if you didn't like GTA4. If you didn't like the cover system and lack of things to do in GTA4, then you'll probably like RDR more, since the cover mechanic in RDR actually works and is useful in multiplayer as well as singleplayer. On top of that there's tons of stuff to do, with lots of SP and MP challenges, 50 levels to advance through in MP and a great, well paced story that really makes you always think "Just one more mission" at 1.30 am
