I have been playing fallout 3 for the past few days, and I had the thought: has turned-based games become a thing of the past? No, I'm not say they are bad just in todays terms they seem out-dated. I love the hybrid V.A.T.S. but I honestly think I wouldn't enjoy the games as much if it were turn based. So I leave you with the question, Is turned-based out-dated?

I absolutely love turn based Rpg's games like Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics, FF4, Lost Odyssey, I wish there were more of them coming out in future.

The problem is developers are starting to move away from it now or making hybrids because it's not fast paced, which is ridiculous because that's why it's called turn based in the first place and why so many people enjoy the strategic battles.

I think there is a real gap in the market for a new and exciting turn based rpg.

That simple.
Exactly, this is not a one size fits all shop.

Exactly.

Is Turn-Based outdated as a way to represent combat between characters? Yes it certainly is. There's enough possible with Real-Time these days

Is Turn-Based outdated as a gameplay form? certainly not! If the strategic elements really work, they can be more challenging than Real-Time stuff. There's a reason Chess is still around

Hybrid works, in the type of Baldur's Gate 2, not Fallout 3
Its kinda turn-basey but real time-ish that i liked. But real time is good.

I'm all for turn-based play myself and can't think of one existing real-time system I'd rather have that isn't pretty much an action game. But I must admit having characters literally take turns (or otherwise disconnecting what's onscreen from what would happen in reality) is a tough sell today.

In a mass-market game, I would make it real-time, but go to slow-mo at key combat events (attack, block, item use, magic use, et al) and pause when any of your characters need a command. That keeps the game a strategy game instead of a skill game without overly compromising the accuracy of the simulation.

Just a note, your first post shouldn't be a thread. Look around and post first.

And, boy you sure like Fallout 3!

Finally, I loved the Civ. games, so I like turned based games quite a bit.

Hybrid: KotOR, Baulders Gate

Pure: Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, Golden Sun

Great games.

Sometimes I WANT to be able to go make that much-needed mid-boss-fight sandwich.

Turn based strategy games are not outdated, in the same way that FPS's and RTS's aren't outdated. It's a game play style, and so long as a game developer continues to use said style in order to make their games, it won't be outdated. Just because it's a bit slower than the twitch-a-fests which have been flooding the market lately doesn't make it any less valuable than any other game type.

Yes, at least as far as I am concerned when FF 12 finally did away with something that has been in every FF game I've ever played (to some degree or another) that's when turn based gaming died for me.

Turn-based can be fun, but they tend to be repetitive. I'd rather play my games in real time. I like the pressure of trying to make the right move while your opponent is doing his at the same time. The first turn-based game I played was Final Fantasy VII and the first thing I wondered was ''If he sees he's getting attacked, why doesn't he do anything back? Because his bar isn't full yet? That's strange...'' and I haven't really changed my thoughts about it.

I've had fun playing the turn-based strategy game Age Of Wonders: Shadow Magic (I think that's the correct title) but it bored me after a while. What real pro does turn-based have over real time? The only pro I can think of is that you have more time to think about your moves when it's turn-based.

i really dont know what a hybrid is in this respect. anyway, turn based games are only good in very rare occasions. paper mario and the mario and luigi games like superstar saga are the only ones that do it well, but they have action commands and stuff, maybe thats what a hybrid is. games where you just pick an attack and watch are boring. this is why i hate pokemon.

turn based is fun but in my opinion, the best way to go by it was the way baldur's gate implemented it. You could play it turn based or you could let it flow. VATS was nice too

I dont like turn based games at all i never did, on a commercial you see swords swinging bullets flying through the air and triple backflips and it looks intense and then you start to play and it just slows it down and it makes you want to avoid the baddies.
