I honestly worry about every single game on that list. I just don't think they are accomplishing horror as well as they used to. In a perfect world, I guess my answer would be Silent Hill, but unfortunately Silent Hill hasn't been Silent Hill for a long time.

System Shock 3 if given the choice. If not, then another GOOD Resident Evil game. Like RE4 only without helpless escort that was Ashley.

Well System Shock isn't strictly horror but god damn we need more of that game, I would leave many stains on my pants if that got made... hmmm, that might not be the best endorsement.

Amnesia's deal will probably be pretty good.
Silent Hill has potential but they aren't handling the IP in a way I find interesting.

But in the end I would much rather them come up with something new, that's the driving force of Horror. Mystery, if you go into an established franchise you know what to expect, and it just isn't as effective.

I remember The Thing being awesome. It's such a great concept: Someone on your squad could be one of the enemy. And the whole arctic isolation thing made it very atmospheric. Then the second half went a bit too action-ey which was a shame. Definitely my pick on this list though. The rest either aren't scary any more or simply not good.

Wait wait wait......

You consider Doom to be a horror game? What's so horrific about it? The bloody, mutilated mess you leave behind as you fearlessly mow down hordes of badies with massive guns?

No one mentioned Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth? Great game, buggy as all hell, but great.

Out of the choices listed, I'm going with Silent Hill. I completely skipped over Homecoming. When I found out you play as a 'soldier' and therefore I he knew how to fight and could dodge and stuff, I knew they'd screwed the game up. Bought Downpour, and while it still doesn't measure up to 2 or 3, it was a step in the right direction. Zero Punctuation sums up my feelings on it.

I would like to throw out Fatal Frame as well. I have never played the games, but from what I understand they were very Japanese-style horror, not U.S. "Oh, let's make this a bloody, gory, and graphic as we can" horror.

As much as I enjoy the Dead Space series (and I do, a lot) for pure pants-wetting, sob-inducing, desperately talking to anyone on Steam to fend off the terror-horror, I'd have to go with the sequel to Amnesia: Dark Descent.

Doesn't it just make you cringe hearing the words "A Machine for Pigs"? And I'm not even vegetarian!

Well, Doom 3 had those jump scares when an enemy would suddenly appear behind you after opening a door or something and go "Boo" (or equivalent). You know, the thing that got old after the fifth time but you were forced to suffer through the exact same thing throughout the entire game "OK. Open door. Turn around. Shoot demon. Go through door. *sigh* and again now".

What I'm saying is, I agree with you

Deadspace 3.

I have the rumblies, the rumblies only curb stomping can satisfy. Although it's more of an action adventure now. Still like it though.

As much as I love the System Shock series I think I'd rather it remain gone. It had a good run but sometimes it's just best to quit while you're ahead!

No, I'd love another Call of Cthulhu game. Dark Corners was pretty damned good despite its rough edges, given another shot at the series and a team of more seasoned developers I honestly think it could have become something genuinely great!
