So, I was thinking, if we had the technology to clone dinosaurs, as they did in Jurassic Park, should we USE that technology?

Assuming that the park was run by people who WEREN'T dumbasses, and that they actually COULD successfully control the dinosaur population (i.e., none of that spontanious sex-changing like in the movie), would it be a mistake to try and create a real-life Jurassic Park?

Obviously, we all know Jeff Goldblum's opinion on the matter, but I want to hear yours.

If they weren't released into the wild and it wasn't run by morons then I don't see why not.

You saw the movies, right?

I don't think it would matter who ran the parks. Something would go wrong, and then we would be in trouble.

However, we should totally try to create Godzilla and put it in a park. That would go well.

Why not? So long as reasonable safety standards are met, we already keep dangerous and quite large animals in our zoos with minimal incident. Granted, not quite on this scale, but most dinosaur species should be quite manageable with a little foresight, such as not designing enclosures that become useless the moment the power goes out...

I would however suggest avoiding the larger predators, and GPS tag the smaller ones, just because of the potential fallout if a mistake is made.

It might actually be worth looking into to see if other uses can be found for such tech. Long extinct species may have attributes that we can use outside of putting them on display, such as efficient food production.

The question stops being one of safety and one of morality. Who are we to raise these creatures out of their own time? Could we make a good life for them here? Do we even really know what they want? Archeologists have worked at figuring out their diets and enviromental needs, but when speaking about a creature that hasn't ever been observed alive or even recently dead, we cannot be sure.

The crucial point is: What could we gain? Certainly efforts will have to made to ensure proper treatment, but would what we stand to gain be worth the risk that we can't care for these animals properly? I'm not sure. The gain to what we know for sure about prehistory could be massive, but what could we do with that information? Can we risk grossly mistreating these creatures for the sake of mere scientific curiousity?

Bitches, who's voting yes.

DID YOU NOT WATCH THE MOVIES.
Yes, and the movies provide an excellent example of how not to run ANY zoo, dinosaur based or otherwise. Swap the dinos out for equally aggressive modern day predators kept under such lax security and you'd still have a bloodbath of a movie, perhaps not one with as many Spielberg moments, but bloody nonetheless.

Just because we could make them, doesn't mean we should. The dinosaurs have been extinct for a long time, it's best we keep it that way.

Just because things have to go wrong doesn't mean it has to end poorly:

On a serious note I would definitely travel there, just bring a guy who stutters and you'll be fine

The most scary thing, the velociraptor turned out to be nothing more than a glorified chicken so I say bring it. I'll stand there and mock those caged bastards all day. And then move to the moon, dinosaurs can't go into space, right?
