Howdy do.

I live in a ground floor apartment in Florida with my family. Our network is hooked to our smart phones, tablets, game consoles, laptops, PC, and smart TV. Rarely are all devices being used at the same time, but nonetheless our internet usage is pretty high, in my opinion.

We have an AT&T provided Pace Gateway 4111n modem, and our average download/upload speed is 4-6Mbps/390-401Kbps.

About twice a day our internet goes out for 5 to 8 minutes at a time, occasionally longer. I've fiddled around with the Wi-Fi channel on my modem, placed the modem in a more open space, had tech support from AT&T run numerous diagnostics and trouble shoots, and still no change in speeds.

I've been thinking for the past few months now that the lines in the apartment might be the problem (seeing as how we seem to get a better signal the moment we step outside), and thought about getting a signal booster, or antenna or something, but I don't know if that will solve the problem, and we are in no position to spend too much money.

Nutshell...

Internet slow, want faster.
Moved and tinkered with modem.
Shitty wiring in apartment?
Cheapest/free solution?

Thank you

If you want to rule out WI-FI bottlenecking then get a Ethernet cable CAT5e (6A if you're going overkill), turn off wifi and then test the bandwidth.

If there's no major improvement then the issue lies with the ISP or even the cable leading to the ISP exchange. nothing much can be done about that.
