I recently went to my friends 19th birthday dinner thing, and after we were all sitting around talking when one of them suggested we travel 1 hour to another town to drink, to which i said no as i wasnt drinking to which i was told i have to go and drink to atleast be social. i dont understand why one must drink to be social? and also i dont understand the driving 1 hour to drink elsewhere...

what does everyone think?

Alcohol is not needed. I know plenty of awesome social people who have never touched alcohol. Sometimes alcohol makes people un-social, it really depends.

you don't have to to be social, but it is a way to relieve stress and relax with people, and it brings the walls that people have down. SO no you dont have to, but it does make it a but easier.

It's not needed, but the alcohol does have the effect of loosening a person up, so it's not a bad touch to a hang out.

No it is not, in anyway.

i dont drink but my friends do, so when they get drunk im usually the one who leads them home, One of these days i will follow up with what i claim and leave them in a ditch and steal their wallets.

Good call on that one.
Of course you don't have to drink to have a good time with friends. If the only time they like you is when they are drunk, you might want to find some new friends.
Note- that was not necessarily directed at your friends, I was just making a general statement

It's not necessary at all. Hanging out with friends should be fun sober, alcohol just has a tendency to make everything funnier, at least in my experience. However, there are plenty of people who just get more depressed or angry when they drink, so always take care who you drink with.

This isn't even a discussion thread.

Let me ask you this: When you were 12, did you need alcohol to be social with your friends? Do you need alcohol to be social with your significant other? Do you need alcohol to be social with your family?

If you answered 'yes' to these, you're probably an alcoholic and I suggest you seek help immediately. To everyone else, the answer is a resounding: No.

That's it.

Simple.

Can it help? Sure. Is it needed? Not in the slightest.

Personally, I don't think you need alcohol to socialize..........with friends..........

When with complete strangers, the loosening effects of alcohol certainly serve as a "social aide."

Not at all.

See the above posts.

I drink rarely, and even then it's only a social thing. I'd never drink to get drunk.

No, but it is funny when you're the only sober one and you're watching everyone make a fool of themselves

Of course you don't need alcohol to have a good time. I've been to plenty of parties where there wasn't a drop in the house. We just had 3 bottles of Coke Diet for burping contests and Twister. One of the best nights of my life.

I'd probably need alcohol to be more like a typical partygoer, but I actually like being a wallflower.

People watching at its best.

Everything causes cancer these days. The sun causes cancer. Not being in the sun causes cancer. Drinking water gives you cancer. Drinking things that aren't water gives you cancer.

It'd be faster to list off what doesn't give you cancer.

Glad to see I'm not the only person who does this.
