I pre-ordered Colonial Marines but could never get it to run so I've never actually played it, I saw the reviews and just stopped bothering after a couple of days. I've been on a bit of an Alien & Predator binge at the moment and so I was wondering if it was going to be worth the effort of installing and trying to get this game to work now, have there been updates to fix any of the issues? Are there any mods that I should look at? Should I just not bother and go play AvP instead?

If you already have it, might as well give it a shot. Just dont break your back over it.

From what I heard it was just a generally awful mess but I still wanted to play through it myself to see if what everyone said was true even then beating it because It still seems generally enjoyable compared to some other games I've delved myself into.

Tbh i had some fun with it back in the day, but then i didn't follow the hype and thus came in with 0 expectations. Also im an absolute wuss who has been wanting a coop marine campaign or one where you're part of a small squad, and this is only aliens game i know of that does that.
Otherwise the playerbase quickly died i remember, making it really hard to find matches in multiplayer.

If you're up for it, i would be up for reinstalling the game and playing coop/multi or w/e.
A burden shared is a burden halved right? -^

Didn't vote in poll cos got no clue what the multi scene is like now, and if i'm a weirdo for having had some fun with the game to begin with.

edit: definitely gonna have to check out the mod

I played it on the PS3 last year. It's dumb but I've played worse games to be honest so if you already have it go ahead and give it a try.

Played it on PC about a year ago. I'd say it's mediocre, it's not the terrible abomination it's made out to be but it would have been a huge disappointment following the hype the game had if one followed it. It is a pretty easy game even after being patched, I beat the game pretty easily on Ultimate Badass difficulty and I'm pretty bad at FPS games.

The problem with Colonial Marines is primary that it has hideous AI and some really frustrating game design decisions. It's a definite 5/10 game. It's not a terrible game, but it often simply isn't fun. And the fact the graphics range from passable to horrible adds insult to injury. Oh, and the fact the game repeatedly borrows from the superior Alien vs Predator 2010 doesn't help it stand out.

There's a mod that tries to improve the game somewhat. I don't agree with all of its changes, but it is definitely worth checking out.

To put things in perspective, Colonial Marines can be frustrating and the AI actively makes the game worse, but Alien: Isolation is also frustrating and has terrible AI that actively makes the game worse. I think it would be dishonest to ignore that. In the grand scheme of things, Colonial Marines is worth playing. The same could be said for Duke Nukem Forever and Gearbox's Nightfire for PC.

Alright, I'm going to give it a go with that mod when I get home.

I suggest nagging Valve for a refund, which shouldn't be too hard if its giving you this much trouble. If all else fails, Saelune has the right idea.
Funny thing about that, I bought a physical copy and did try to return it when I gave up after 5 days of trying to get it to work but they didn't want to take it back off me, just gave me a refund as soon as I said what the game was and took my receipt but not my game so I still have it (I did consider chucking it out at one point but I'm kinda a hoarder), I didn't even have to mention the technical problems about it and that I hadn't been able to boot it up so I just took it as it must have been THAT bad.

Why not just play Alien Isolation?

From what I understand, Isolation is the game that Sega actually wanted Gearbox to develop. So in a sense, it is the true Colonial Marines.
Isolation isn't a shooter really, its not the same kind of game. I'll probably play Isolation again at some point as I really enjoyed it.

I'm going to echo the common sentiment and tell you to avoid that game. Freaking a, but Gearbox screwed up on even the most basic concepts of this freaking game. You barely even fight xenomorphs in it for crying out loud! Most of the fighting is with Weyland Yutani mercs!

My advice? Hit up E-Bay or Amazon and try to find Aliens action figures. Sure it'll be more expensive, but I can guarantee you'll have more fun per dollar playing with those than you would Colonial Marines.

I guess if, for some reason, all your other unplayed FPS games disappeared from your collection, and you needed something to kill time, and someone uninstalled mine sweeper from you PC, you could play it.

I don't think it is a steaming pile of crap, but really mediocre, with poor AI, poor pacing and one hit kills that happen at random. All in all, I would play a number of games before getting into A:CM. Just get the Xenomorph mod for Skyrim, L4D2 or DOOM if you are so interested in killing aliens.

I played a little bit of it last night and had the problem with with one hit kills at random.

It also has the problem when choosing the difficulty of using random phrases to denote your choice from 4 options. I hate when it gives me 4 options, I normally pick the middle option first time but when there is 4 options I can't do that so I picked the higher of the two middle ones thinking I've played enough FPSs to be able to cope with this. I did actually enjoy the game play so far and the one hit killed just make me want to stay out of range of the aliens as I should but I've only had time to play the first level so I'll see how it goes if I get chance to play it tonight.

No. I played the whole thing and it was very boring. It's just not a good game. There is a deluge of games in the world at the moment, the vast majority of them can be found for $20 or less (counting bargain bin sales, that's including all AAA titles). It's just not worth your time and the Aliens label doesn't change that.

Alien: Isolation was a good game. I really enjoyed it and the IP was used to enhance the experience, not excuse its existence.

Or play AVP, AVP2, or the AVP game. Not to mention the Arcade classic ALIENS.
