I've played a few more levels and I'm actually enjoying it, yeah its defiantly not a particularly good game, all the AvP games are better games and its still a little buggy but its not as bad as I was expecting so far.

On the difficulty I'm playing at if the aliens get close you will die which I like but the difficulty of the sections seems to vary wildly which I don't like.

You start with the Pulse Rifle and Shotgun and I've not seen any reason to change from these two weapons yet other than using the flame thrower and smart gun for the fun of it but they're not weapons you can have in your inventory so you only get them for certain areas.

I can see the basis of a good game here if they just polished it up a bit more before release which makes it all the more sad that it wasn't.

Note: I'm playing without the mod at the moment just to see what the game is like vanilla.

No idea why anyone was expecting this game to be anything but average/bad?
Because it was seen that someone enthusiastic about the project had learned from past mistakes and was going to give his best. Not blatantly lie to the audience. Given the existence of the very good AVP games and Alien Isolation, there is simply no excuse for the level of quality given or the process the production took.

EDIT: As for your dismissal of audience expectations, it's really not a good route to take and all it does is excuse the developers for making a crappy product.

In this era of uncertainty, anything can happen, but sometimes it can be very appearent how a game will turn out.

Like No Man's Sky. I knew from the announcement to the features that were being discussed about the game that I am like "There is no way this game can realistically pull off what they are saying without any comprimise"

Here's a tip, you can press B or something (keyboard) to open your inventory. This inventory contains every gun in the game, all with their own ammo pools. It's not a cheat, this is the only way to access the DLC weapons. Yes, the game is in fact this bad. My recommended loadout is the standard pulse rifle and the unique pulse rifle. They have seperate ammo pools, for some reason.

Yeah it took me two levels to find that out, and I only found it out because I got stuck with 2 shotguns and couldn't do anything about guys at long range so I had to look online.

...it was far worse at launch. It's currently in the realm of 'pretty not good but at least functional and playable' after all the patching done to it that fixed... some of the AI problems (i.e. enemies still don't properly pathfind towards you but at least bosses try to attack you instead of glitching out). Co-op still shatters the AI like no tomorrow and nothing's been balanced but at least you can finish all the levels now instead of having to pray to the gods of chance.

Personally I wouldn't shell out money for the game to begin with even after all the patches, but if you've already got it for whatever reason then might as well play through it. I'd still recommend the 2001 AvP game over it though.

I'm going to echo the common sentiment and tell you to avoid that game. Freaking a, but Gearbox screwed up on even the most basic concepts of this freaking game. You barely even fight xenomorphs in it for crying out loud! Most of the fighting is with Weyland Yutani mercs!

My advice? Hit up E-Bay or Amazon and try to find Aliens action figures. Sure it'll be more expensive, but I can guarantee you'll have more fun per dollar playing with those than you would Colonial Marines.
That's effing great! I've never heard someone actually recommend buying the action figures to play with instead the dumb game, that takes the cake. I loved my action figures, pity that at my time I only had GI Joe's, no xenomorphs to impale and decapitate them though.

OT: Sorry I can't give a better recommendation that the ones above, though I'm tempted to give it a shot myself. I've played most other Aliens games that came out though, and would say you won't be disappointed with any of the AvP games, they were done with care and attention to source and detail, and capture the marine POV ambience pretty well.

Basically that's the reason I'm playing it now, because I've already played most of the other games and still had the game lying around.

Also the reason I wanted to play an Alien game is because I just received my copy of AvP: The Hunt Begins which is a AvP board game with miniatures, so I have been playing with action figures as well kinda.

Yeah fair enough, to be honest I'm in the exact same boat - played all the other aliens games that I like into the ground. Which has led me to become ever so slightly curious about Colonial Marines as of late, especially with the unofficial patches and whatnot. Also makes me wonder what's the biggest issue with it, seems to be the AI and buggy movements, which seems harder to fix with a patch than other possible issues/glitches.

AvP: The Hunt Begins looks pretty awesome. It actually looks a lot like Space Hulk, which is my all-time favorite board game (but without the bunching up of units in extremely tight corridors). Are you going to paint them?

That looks amazing! I never had the steady hand for that kind of work, but I have a friend who loves 40K miniatures, spends up to 8 hours per piece. I'll show these to him, he always said Predators are some of the hardest things to paint. Meanwhile, I have a set of Zombicide miniatures gathering dust, after botching one so badly I never got the courage or resolve to tackle another one.

Thanks for sharing. And let us know how you get on if you end up giving CM a crack!
