I won't lie, I haven't played too much of Half Life, but from what I've gathered it just seems that he has no personality aside from being a geek. My thoughts on this were revitalized after this article, http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/features/10291-The-Time-I-Was-a-Madman-in-Half-Life-2 , and was wondering how others felt.

No, he isn't but he makes a good blank slate for people to project themselves onto, which is good enough to tell the story.

He's the ultimate nerd power fantasy, at least.

Dat immaculate beard.

It's like Hugh Laurie and Yahtzee had a scientist love-child.

He's not a particularly good game character though, much like how Jack in Bioshock is
little more than a puppet for Frank Fontaine
and the player character in Dragon Age: Origins is basically just somebody for all the NPCs to spew exposition at.

EDIT: Eh, okay, the DA:O comparison may not exactly be fair, since there's at least actual writing for the character. They still don't have any actual personality though, even compared to Hawke/Shepard.

The fact that he looks like Hugh Laurie always makes me conflicted if they ever decided to make a Half Life film.

I mean, it would be awesome to have Hugh Laurie in it, because he's basically the perfect choice for him, obviously due to the similarities in appearance. But then he wouldn't be able to speak XD

He's an inspiration to theoretical physicists everywhere that want to smash shit up with a crowbar. Seriously, I'm surprised no one has studied the links between advanced quantum physics and violence. QM makes for some very angry people, and I was one of them.

But as said above by my new best friend, he's just there to have exposition spewed at him. In Half Life I liked it, because you didn't know what was going on, but neither did anyone else. In HL2 however, I found myself wanting a button that would beat the nearest NPC until they offered some adequate explanation as to why they got to stay in the relative safety of their bunker, while I couldn't even sit down and have a cup of tea between people trying to murder me and more people trying to murder me.

No and I think he's a bad character. here is why.

He has no personality I know he is meant to be a blank slate to immerse into but that doesn't work at least for me,because he has a set appearance back story job name everything so projecting myself onto him is tricky.

plus when he interacts with other characters with actual voices and depth and doesn't say anything he seems like a right prick, this can also be reinforced by his lack of empathy both to the men he kills and his coworkers who get slathered, I mean I don't love my coworkers but if they were being murdered I wouldn't stand by not giving any reaction so he seems like a massive dick.

Yes. Do not doubt the Freeman.
Gordon is me. Whoever I want him to be. He has risen from being a mere theoretical physicist to being a theoretical physicist fighting for his life and others when everything goes to shit and finally to the revered inter-dimensional warrior of freedom for mankind.

All while tea-bagging his way through Black Mesa, Xen, City 17, the countryside or whatever place his crazy adventures find him next.

He is the ultimate nerd-fantasy. Without the sex. So far.

OK, who says Gordon Freeman is "the best character" and why do I only ever hear second hand accounts of that statement? I mean, if it was as common as I am led to believe, surely I would have seen this said directly at some point, rather than having it always relayed to me.

Furthermore, what does "best" even mean? I can agree or disagree, however without knowing what the idea behind it is, I can't say anything. "Very well written"? No, I certainly can't say that. "Very well known" - then yes, he is very well known.

No, He's barely a character outside of the player actions. Even then, he's not terribly interesting, having nothing that really distinguishes him from every other hero.

Gordon Freeman is a hovering camera, I'd barely call him a character. You want an FPS with a good, characterized player character, try Far Cry 3.

He is a pretty terrible character really, simply because, well he doesn't really have any character at all. He never says anything, just walks around blindly following orders and killing aliens etc, he is basically a robot. The only thing unique about him is his trademark look, he has no personality whatsoever.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing however, as it works very well in the Half Life series. But when you get down to it you have to admit that Gordon Freeman is a pretty awful character, hell he isn't really a character at all. He was designed to be a blank slate instead, and what a great blank slate he is.

What "character" does he have? He's just a blank state for you to project on to.

This guy, however

Yeah.

right here, this.

i understand that they wanted to go with more of a blank slate to project yourself onto, but it really doesn't help when he has a backstory setup and everyone already knows him in game, so it just makes it awkward as hell when your this silent camera just bobbing around.

The "being able to project yourself" thing is bullshit with him. In all honesty if people say he has a character at all, then he's the fucking Terminator.

Seriously.

At least Master Chief has a personality.

If Gordon Freeman is the best video game character, wouldn't Link & Crono be as well?

To answer, no. For me at least. You'll never find a concrete answer as this is the most subjective of questions.

Nooope.
There's the "blank slate" argument which doesn't really work because then he's not a good character he's just you, and chances are you're a boring person.

There's also the whole thing with looking at his transformation from weak frail scientist to super soldier nerd man but we barely see anything of him pre-Black Mesa. The actual Black Mesa expansion tries to expand on this a bit (awww, you cut off the ponytail!) but we barely get a chance to build his "helpless nerd" persona.
