Yesterday, while i was reading the paper, i started thinking about what makes certain things a 'big deal'.

An article about broadcasting court hearings on television forged the idea as one of the interviewees was making a huge deal about how much of a bad idea this would be despite little being known about how such a thing would be implemented.

So my question i pose to you lovely people today is:
Is something only a big deal if you make it a big deal?

Well most of the political "controversies" are manufactured by the various networks so they have something to talk about, like the new Supreme Court member (blanking on her name), or the ACORN scandal. But I think eventually important stuff will make its way to the top

A couple years back, there was a big hooplah about Texas (probably, it was a while ago) changing what history books in school say about American history. Specifically, they'd emphasize different characters. Goodbye, Thomas Jefferson, hello, obscure guy I haven't heard about and for good reason. Well, I SAY there was a big hooplah, but that isn't true.
Even my father, a man who jumps at the chance to bad-mouth Texas and republicans and yada yada yada, didn't see what the big deal was. Helloooo? They're changing what kids learn about their own friggin' country! It's like high school math not teaching geometry or algebra, and instead focus on crap we learned in 8th grade. Yes, this is indeed a big damn deal.

And yet, on the other hand, there are trivial things that some people genuinely care about, like the personal lives of celebrities. Also, ponies are srs bsns. And hell, I'm the tool who will spend the better part of an hour laying out why one show is great and another show is terribad.

George Carlin once commented on the difference between stuff and shit. "My shit is stuff, your stuff is shit." Such is the case when it comes to what we consider as important or not. My stuff matters, your shit doesn't.
It just so happens that there's some SHIT that goes on in the world that is important STUFF to everyone.
