Okay, so I'm an independent film maker. Nothing flashy mind you, to be honest i'm very VERY hungry... Anyways, to pay the bills i have to take on other peoples projects. Now its one thing to film something you have no or little interest in. I've had people come to me to shoot a short where the premise of the idea is the stupidest thing i've ever heard. But hey, it pays the bills.

The one thing I refuse to make however is Porn. Now I will NOT lie to you and say that I don't look at porn... cuz I do. I just refuse to waist my time and talent writing/directing/filming/editing it. Don't take me as proud or that I have a big head, I would just rather apply myself to something more creative, possibly stupid, but more creative than repeated thrustings from different angles.

But, as a starving artist, I find myself in a unique situation. I am Catholic. Now, unlike many churches and people around me, I've always been low key about my religion. I don't go screaming at people that they are going to hell, or even speak with an elevated tone about the man. If people tell me that they are southern baptist or any other jesus following church that goes under any name other than Catholic, or if they are wiccan, atheist, jewish, etc, they again do not get the "going to hell" speech from me. I respect other people for their faiths and I realize that everyone has their own path to walk.

If asked about my faith and why I believe, I will gladly tell them and I do enjoy a deep religious discussion. I try my best to avoid arguing about religious beliefs because its not longer a sharing of ideas, but a mission to prove one is right and one is wrong.

Now the point of this whole thing. A local church is looking for video work, for someone like me to help them "aggressively reache out to people who are far from God". And while I'm all for spreading the good word, I have issues against being condescending to people and judging them. So if i take this job and they turn out to have a stick up their ass, is filming their videos the same thing as filming porn?

as you don't care about either, go with whichever one helps pay the bills the most. the seem to be the extreme opposites of the same scale so may as well make as much money as possible

Well literally, not at all.

But if it pays the bills and you don't have a moral issue with it (or one big enough to stop you from getting a decent paycheck) then go for it.

Well it's the same in the sense of being a violation of your principles. So I'd say yeah it's equivalent.

Though to be fair you should just film porn and evangelical crap, objecting to it doesn't mean it won't be filmed and at least you put food on the plate that way...

It's not the same thing as filming porn, but that doesn't make it right at all. In fact, it's worse than porn.

Forced religion is very wrong indeed.

Just make the porn.

Well, no. Porn at least provides entertainment!

Ba-Dum-Tish!
[sub]I kid, I kid! Don't kill me![/sub]

OT: Not really. You'll find religious yammering is more widely accepted than humping ducks.

As long as its not for the Westboro Baptist Church, You're all good.

How is making a video intent on spreading the Gospel anything similar to porn?

You're not filming porn. You're filming propaganda.
Don't take the job, you've got better ways to use your filmmaking skills.

Hmm well that's sure a dilemma hey, I guess I would say it's not really the same thing, no. This is coming from someone who is not religious and has no opinion on god one way or another.

No, but if you take the job, look at the script first or try to make it where you can walk away if you don't like where it's going.

While it isn't the same sort of not using your talents, it's still compromising on your personal values and therefore it can be put in the same category (things that aren't in keeping with what you want do as a film maker) as making porn.

That said if you are really in a rough spot I would suggest that you do it. Feeling like a sellout is better than being hungry.

I would say WORSE. Now I am biased because I have no faith, belief in the great bully in the sky, But propaganda is the problem with the world today. People brainwashed before they have a chance to think for themselves or scared into religion because of some film.

People deserve their own choices and things like ''Bible club'' for kids make me physically sick.

I come from a once pagan country and pagan I shall stay, but I won't stuff my beliefs down other peoples throats.

That my way of thinking. Im not saying they are the same, but if filming porn is against your principles, whatever they may be, and the same is said for filming the churches religious movie, than they both would seem to be conflicting.
