I already know the answer myself and that is yes but i wanted to hear other peoples opinion. It is important because it sets the atmosphere

Not always-- like, I mute the volume on most MMOs and play my own music. In fact, if there isn't a voice-acted cutscene going on in a game I'm more inclined to have the volume very low and also be watching TV on another screen (I require at least two full-sized TVs and a laptop at my side when I'm gaming-- what can I say, I'm a product of an overstimulated generation).

Sometimes, though, I like to have the music up-- boss fights especially, like in Final Fantasy XIII. But that's also a concentration thing (hard to focus on a hard boss with three fucking screens going). Like you said, the music does create a certain atmosphere which can seriously enhance climactic moments.

Absolutely.
Would you rather fight an Giant Plant Monster that fires lasers with "the sounds of nature" or

Music is one of the most important aspects in a Game IMO.

Fitting music is very important to complete the experience. Especially in open world games and MMOs. Im thinking horror games don't need music because silence is part of the mood, but generally i think its very important.

I agree completely except sometimes lack of music sets atmosphere too i.e. bioshock

Depends. Sometimes the music is really good and can help let you know what's coming, build suspense, or add to the intense fights as seen in Left 4 Dead. Sometimes it's just there so the entire game won't be you walking around in silence because that would be boring as seen in Gears of War and pretty much every game ever. Sometimes a nice lack of music can build suspense like in Metal Gear Solid.

But sometimes it doesn't matter. Whenever I play Diablo II, I always have my iPod on listening to my own music.

Yes. Imagine you playing a character walking in the woods. The whole scene can be changed into many different forms by just changing the music. It can be scary, funny, romantic or sad, just by using music.

I think that it is because in Singularity when you are walking through a tunnel of blind mutants and you have to walk really slowly so they dont come and careses your head with their teeth the music really suits the mood it is like a robot powering down but scarier (if you know what im saying) if you havent played singularity its a fun game with a great story

I think Mass Effect would not have been as gripping or engaging without that phenomenal synth music setting the scene of a vast and lonely galaxy.

It just would not have been the same game.

Music is so important to the medium- it's audio visual, right?

Music is very important in most games, but in some games, like sports games or racing games, it isn't.

Most people never really notice music unless they try, or unless it's awful, but it's a major part of how we create an image of our surroundings.

Music can change the mood for example if you had Dance of the SugarPlum Fairies (look it up if you want and dont know it) whilst playing Dead Space it would change the mood somewhat.

Absolutely.
Medicore music doesn't do much for a game, but fantastic, fitting music does wonders.
I can, and do, hum the Baldur's Gate 1 or 2 theme randomly. Same with the Morrowind and Oblivion themes. And the awesome Mass Effect theme! Great music sticks with you, like the Star Wars or Indiana Jones themes. You know them, you can hum them, you make adventure style poses to them (Well I do!)...Great music is incredibly important.

We'll forget about 'good graphics', and we'll forget about control schemes and what system or platform it was on.
But the music will always be epic, will always be timeless.

In ways, yes.

But it should be done well. music should be able to help emotionally immerse you into the game's current mood or atmoshpere (Ala Mass Effects 1 and 2, Fallout 3, or the Soul Calibur series.) Or be able give a sense of excitement that enhances your interest in a game (Ala Starfox: Assault or (arguably) the Sonic francise.)

Yes. I think it always is, even if you don't actually listen to it sometimes. Just imagine yourself playing your favorite game, having a good time at any point you might be listening to the music, when suddenly random music that completely goes against the mood (such as circus music playing loudly in a horror game that in no way links to a circus) comes on. It would TEAR you out of the experience with a forceful rip. If the music doesn't help convey the idea that the stage/game is trying to give, it will easily ruin the experience.

The reason I think people listen to their music instead of the in-game music though is because of the simple fact that quite ofter the music gets repetitive. That doesn't make it bad per say, but it can quickly become dull. But the music is still important in giving a sense of what's going on, like audio cues in movies.

It helps create atmosphere and enhances the experience (if the music is fitting). As bad as transformers (movie game) were, the few action moments that cooperated with Steve Jablonsky's musical composition, made (some) of the moments, a bit more than enjoyable. During the autobots' descend, for example.

I don't have any sound at all for WoW and use my own music, but games like Team Fortress I prefer to keep the sound and music.
Dynasty Warriors has some fantastic music.

Just as long as it's not a cute game with Marilyn Manson playing in the game. or the dark game has something cute and fluffy. Unless the cute in fluffy twists into a dark and evil mass and chokes you when you sleep.

...I'm sorry, I lost my train of thought, what was the question again?
