A friend just asked if Scorpio is Gen 9 or not.

Interesting question I've not heard anyone else ask. It will be coming out, I think, around the same time as Nintendo's next console. Will Nintendo's next console not be the launch of Gen 9?

It will be BC, but so was the Wii and then the Wii U, gen 7 and 8.

4K disc: Xbox S supposedly has it and I cannot consider it Gen 9. More of an upgrade to Gen 8.

But the Scorpio is boasting that it will be so powerful that I have to think, if people develop for it in particular, the 4K graphics by comparison, even if the game is available for the 2013 XB1, will be like comparing the games on XB1 vs the 360.

Your thoughts? What will constitute the beginning of Gen 9 (if there is to be one at all).

First wait until specs and games are shown. Boasting is meaningless if it isn't backed up with evidence. But, yeah. I would consider 4K gen 9 (if it can keep playable framerate).

They are boasting specs of about 50% more teraflops than the PS4 Pro. But you're dead on in that, great to boast. Now prove it.

PS4 Pro comes out shortly. Claims it will play 4K games but at 2/3rd Scorpio's boasted power, I have to wonder how well. Also, no 4k disc player> PS4 Pro Gen 9? Only 3 years after launch of PS4.

Adoption will also be interesting. I have a decent size home with kids. Multi-TVs and consoles. Only 1 4K TV: the only one an Xbox S, PS4 Pro or Scorpio I'd bother putting on for now.

Well, the time between the start of the past generation and this one was exceptionally longer than any other beforehand. The 4th generation started mere 4 years after the 3rd one did. Adoption was interesting the past generation too, as not many people had HD TV and games like Dead Rising were nearly unplayable without one (because the text was too blurry in an old TV).

They're trying to kill off traditional console generations, with the exception of Nintendo. What we have now are specialized PCs, with incremental upgrades to follow. Might as well call it Gen version 8.1

PS4 Pro won't run anything at native 4K outside of indie titles. AAA games are at best going to run at 2715x1527 or about 2x 1080p with a 30FPS lock and get upscaled the rest of the way to 4K. The PS4 Pro has an underclocked RX 480 as its GPU, it's simply not fast enough to run AAA games at 4K native unless the developers are willing to make huge sacrifices to the visuals of their game to get 4K.

If the Scorpio does have the boasted specs, it could be considered a generational leap hardware wise, though at this point the idea of generations is dying as Sony and Microsoft are basically selling locked down HTPCs with gaming capabilities rather than dedicated game consoles these days.

Funny, you're right! With my 360, I bought my first 50" DLP 1080i (or 720P) TV. Wouldn't have been that much of a big deal on any other TV. HD TV caught on.

I do think the challenges of 4K are greater. I have a 65" and according to some charts, unless I'm pretty close to it, I will hardly notice the difference from 4K. (Xmen Days of Future Past filmed at 48 FPS is so gorgeous, I've read you don't see much in the 4K upgrade) We'll see. Jealous someone I know has an 80". Yes, you need 4K when you get that large. Now I need a house large enough to support it!

I definitely agree with that when it comes to the PS4 slim. Microsoft is blurring the lines between PC and console like never before. Soon, a single purchase of either PC or Xbox game will be playable by download to the other. Of course, I can't wait.

Interesting stuff. And I just put a RX 480 into a PC with a I7-930. As far as I can tell, even that old CPU is not a bottle neck. When I crank a AAA game settings, I get more like 30 FPS at 1080P. It doesn't strike me as a 4K gaming GPU.

You have a point. According to Wikipedia, it may be out as early as 2016 or world wide March 2017, about 6 months ahead of Scorpio.

While it likely will NOT have the graphic power of the Scorpio, neither did the Wii have the power of the Xbox 360, but radically new hardware marked it as the beginning of something new. Now, let's see if they deliver something new. At this time, I have no idea what it is going to be.

Reviewing this for clues...
