Hello, I just bought an already used version of the Silent Hill HD remake for the PS3 because I read all the fantastic reviews for the original Silent Hill series and thought it would be worth a try. I didn't have any experience with this series before (I played a lot of Resident Evil and Condemned before, so the horror genre is not so new to me).
But I played Silent Hill 2 now for, let's say, three hours and I don't get the point of the game. I mean the sound and the graphics are okay, they don't bother me but the whole game I really find kind of boring (sorry to all the fans of this game).
For those who don't want to hear about the beginning of the game, please stop reading, the coming text contains spoilers!
So at the beginning I was in that room making my way out in the town through the forest walkway hearing barking and growling, I thought that could become a scary game. Then I travelled for a really long time in the town, searching for clues (and walking takes so much time in this game). I found my first enemy (killing him was easy, but the combat system was apparently not a major point for the developers). Having killed my aggressor I finally somehow landed in the appartment blocks and that's where things really got nasty! Not because of the athmosphere (which I found wasn't scary at all), but because of the controls (I already changed the controller layout!). and because of the darkness. I mean darkness is okay, but I closed my room darkened it as much as I could and still didn't manage to find the first staircase. Then until I found the flashlight I could have played "Journey" in a whole session... And so it goes on and on, trying every door if it is locked, being ambarassed finding the exit to the different rooms thanks to the superbe camera angles (irony!!!
) and by searching for things that MIGHT help me. An example: I was stuck when the little girl kicked the key away and I didn't know what to do, I searched long enough until I searched a walkthrough for this part. My mistake was that I found a caddy on the 3rd floor, "activated" it, but didn't activate it for a second time to get the handgun. When I finally had the handgun I went back to several rooms which changed (a dead guy appeared in front of a TV, who wasn't there before, but he was now there because I had a handgun!?). So I have to find everything to trigger story events. Maybe back in time this game was good and I know shouldn't compare it to nowadays horror games, but even in the time this game came out, it was all about walking sessions and trial and error riddles. The story seems okay, but the whole gameplay seems stiff and stretched, filled with walking and searching.
This is my opinion, so am I missing something? What is so much better with these Silent Hill games than with other horror games? I can't help, but I find it one of the most boring games I ever played and I consider myself open to a lot of game genres. I am looking forward for your answers.
Please tell why you chose "Yes" or "No".
