I was thinking to myself the other day about how i rarely play my games more than once through now. This meaning replaying through on the same difficulty setting, or replaying simply to revisit the story. I don't know if it's that now i have better access to money, or if it's the rapid release of games, or maybe it's that the achievement system has us all brainwashed into moving to a new game as fast as possible.

I don't know what it is, but there's only been a few games from the last 2 generations that i've felt compelled to play through more than once; but i always find joy in hooking up my psx/n64/snes and replaying some of those games from ages ago.

Edit: took the s off replay.

There are fewer games these days with the same re-playability I found in titles such as the Jak series or Suikoden, Final Fantasy and so on. There are plenty of more modern games that can be played for a long time though; Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 & Assassin's Creed come to mind for me.

I'd say it's sitting there, bleeding to death and getting ignored by all the damn medics.

For me it's a case of more games and less time to play them. With my backlog of games atm i don't think I'll be doing any replays anytime soon.

I kinda agree, I've rarely played a PS3 game more than once, unless I really liked it or there was an actual reason to play again e.g challenge mode/new game+. But some times I'll play a game again and again for no real reason, the best example of this was Dead Space, I finished it 3 times in one day, but that was becasue I felt like getting the platinum trophy.

Welcome to the Escapist, we hope your stay is a long one.

OT: I think it's more a lack of quality in current games that reduces the desire to play through again. A lot of games now seem to put different endings in to try and get people to come back and play the game again, rather than putting effort into an enjoyable gaming experience and engaging storyline.

There are some exceptions to this, but on the whole I still have more fun going back and playing Secret of Mana on the SNES than I would playing though Infamous a second time to see the other ending.

It's a mixed area, I think. There are so many factors involved that it's hard to say why games lost their appeal sometimes. Gamers, game time, game quality...all these factors and so much more get dumped into a big pot when it comes to game replays. Me, I played ME2 about 6 times and I'm still going through it. Dragon Age I played about thirteen times, and the only reason I stopped was because I got ME2. Granted, I haven't been playing either as much at the moment, but that's cause I'm giving my other PC games a bit more attention right now. I still go back for Team Fortress 2, BF2142, and some other old titles like Diablo II and the Doom series (via Skulltag). But some games I just don't like replaying either.

The reason for me? Usually it's length. Games like Assassin's Creed I play once and have done with. It was simply too long with too much of the same to warrant playing more than once. Granted, it was an excellent game while it lasted, but something that's as linear as the AC series prevents prolonged exposure. And maybe that's a problem. Or maybe not. Not every game can have high replay I suppose.

I guess it really just comes down to how much you like a game and whether or not it naturally lends itself to replaying.

Not really, I've replayed all my PS2 games to death by now and I plan to do so as well with my Trey games if there's a drought in new games. Which is highly doubtable as I only recently got meh a Trey

No way! Games like Mass Effect, Heavy Rain, Fable, and others have given me plenty reason to revisit games multiple times. I have never had so many games to replay before. If anything, we are entering a golden age where greater replayability is becoming more common.

Not at all, I still have a large pile of games that I replay regularly...

I think that we might be going in the opposite direction...

I used to be able to buy one game and that would be the ONLY game that I would play for 2-3 months afterwards, but these days I'm lucky if I stick with it for two weeks. Even Mass Effect 2 only saw me through about a week and a half.

I suppose this is what i really meant with the original post. Yeah, i played through ME2 twice, but i doubt i'll pick it up again.

I suppose what i'm talking about is games that you play through, finish, let a few months and a few more titles pass by, then pick it up again. I haven't done this with a game in ages, outside of the realm of multiplayer.
