So Thief: Deadly Shadows is on sale on Steam, for five dollars. Sounds like a good deal, I'm probably gonna buy it, but I just want to make sure the world doesn't universally hate it first.

(Yes I know the dollar sign goes before the numeral but that's not how you say it and frankly the English language can go fuck itself.)

I tried the last time it was on sale and had some fun with it, just never went back to finish it.

It's generally considered the weakest of the Thief series, you seem to be a Yahtzee fan I'm sure you saw his video on it, but it's still a damn good game.

That said the Thief games are a bit of an acquired taste. Extremely stealth oriented, minimal combat (If any!), highly atmospheric. IF you're expecting a steampunk Assassins Creed you'd be disappointed. If you want something run & gun... again, disappointed. If you like a slower paced game that heaps on the atmospheric effects and requires a bit of patience but rewards that patience with the feeling of a job well done, then hell, might just be your favourite game.

Depends entirely on you. Good game though, for 5 dollars I'd recommend it!

I found it enjoyable, even if it did seem to wreck things from the earlier games. Maps are a bit smaller, but the stealthing has improved quite a bit.

Having a Yahtzee-moment as avatar, and actually caring for others' opinions?:p

Joke aside, it is a deal, take it.

I'd say "Yes". Gameplay-wise and in level design, Thief 2 is far better, but I found Thief 3 to be very enjoyable. In fact, it's the first game in the Thief series I played and it sold me on the stealth genre.

As a standalone game, it's great, as long as you don't expect an Assassin's Creed style sandbox that lets you sneak around and rob anyone in a huge, huge city (that's what Morrowind is for :D). It's also on a smaller and less detailed scale (talking about the size and dimension of the locations and the missions here) and somewhat dumbed down compared to its predecessors. With no prior experience of the series (and before AC came out), though, I adored the game.

Plus, that's where you have The Shalebridge Cradle. You can't call yourself a gamer if you haven't played that level. Just for god's sake, don't read spoilers.

Thief 3 dropped the ball all over the place, both with things it changed and new things it tried to add. However even purchasing it at full price I felt it was worthwhile.

I found the stealth aspect tremendously diminished. In the first two games you need to worry about your speed and the surface material you're on all the time, in Thief 3 if you crouch you're 100% silent even at top speed and supposedly noise surfaces.

Well I'm not sure about the US, but on Game.co.uk you can get all 3 games for £5.99. So no, it's not.

Eh. Maybe I was just wowed by the fact that now firing an arrow off into the distance didn't cause all the guards to immediately rush over to my hiding place to peer into the shadows and proclaim their incredulity.
