After Assassin?s Creed was released to such mixed reviews and good sales, Ubisoft Montreal started work on Assassin?s Creed II with the intention to improve for the sequel. This is what we got.
First off, the story. It picks up off where the first game left off. Desmond and Lucy escape from Abstergo. They meet up with two other assassins that have their own animus. Desmond relives the life of new assassin from the renaissance Ezio Audtiore da Firenze. Overall this story is amazing. There is so much to like here. Great characters, memorable set pieces, and a great overall narrative.
Now for the gameplay, the gameplay is improved greatly from the original Assassin's Creed. The free running system has been improved. Any problems in the first game have been ironed out and is more fluid than ever. The combat has been improved as well. The combat is more fluid and more varied. There are many more weapons and finishing moves. It makes combat feel more refreshing. There is a lot more side missions and activities than the first game. Overall the gameplay was improved upon in all areas.
Now for the design of the game. It is an open world just like the previous game. The world is filled with many NPCs that make it feel like a living world. There are six locations to run around in. Florence, Venice, the Villa, Forli, Tuscany, and the mountains. These locations all feel different and have plenty of collectables to find and side missions to compete. There is plenty of fighting, assassinations and free running. Missions are a mix of new style and the style from the first game. Classic assassinations return and so does collecting information and stealth. There are new style missions like chases, tombs, factions, and even an economic system. Overall the returning and new missions types blend in together to make the game feel refreshing the whole way through.
Now for the presentation. The graphics are great. There is plenty of detail in the environment. The characters also have a good amount of detail. The only problem is with the detail in the character's faces. The game has an amazing soundtrack. All the music fits perfectly with the setting and whatever is going on. The voice acting is awesome with Roger Craig Smith steals the show as Ezio. Overall the presentation is great.
What I liked about the game. The story, characters, combat, setting, free running, graphics, soundtrack, voice acting, the open world, stealth (when done right) and the entire game pretty much.
What I didn't like about the game. At times the missions are cheap to add gameplay time and sometimes when stealth is forced it is hard to be stealthy.
Overall this game is amazing and everyone should play it.
