I was writing my research paper on the Large Hadron collider for my English composition class and no one knew what it was. My physics and calculus classes didn't fare much better I thought this was pretty big news.

I just was curious how many people actually know of it and if this is just another case of Americans being ignorant again.

And for those of you who didn't catch it, last week it collided particles for the first time at 7 TeV

Nope i have no what you are talking about because i don't pay attention to most things that don't directly affect me. Call me ignorant if you must but that's the way i am

I know that it exists, but I haven't followed anything surrounding it. All I know is that it could have does a whole lot of damage had it gone wrong. I'm typing this so it obviously didn't.

Yeah I know what it is partially. That massive machine scientists are using to smash particles together at extraordinarily fast speeds?

I followed it for a bit, but I haven't heard anything recent about it. Good to hear it fired finally.

The largest supercollider ever created, possibly the doom of mankind and the universe.

first glance shows that the escapists know more about the cutting edge of science than my advanced physics and math courses.

sometimes I hate going to a community college.

It happens. Don't worry about it.

More like Large Money Sink Collider.

Seriously, if they don't find the Higg's Boson like they intended from the start, then all they have is a giant particle accelerator.
your right, we should go back and live in caves since science is expensive

Well there's your problem.

And to anyone who mentions its possible doomsday effects. Lolz. Scientific illiteracy at its finest.

your physics class didn't know what the LHC is?

Oh well, they're just kids, but I assure you, if they're at all interested in Physics for more then just needing to take a science in school they should know

a machine than rams particles at very high speeds buried under CERN in belgium (its not but i for the life of me cant remember) to attempt to create a black hole and end the world as we know it
CERN isn't a place, it's a company (or organization) It's a non-english acronym, but in english it is the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

the LHC is buried under Geneva Switzerland actually.

and it's trying to see something that happens billions of times in the universe at any given moment (including on earth), but is completely unpredictable in a natural setting

Not only do I know what it is (not enough to write a paper on it, mind you) but I'm still hoping something will go awry and it'll open up persistent black holes that'll run the risk of sucking Earth into it.

Yes but its a shiny giant particle accelerator! Even mad scientists deserve toys.

Just because I am curious how much the escapist knows of the LHC here is a question.

What do the scientists at CERN hope to find other than the higgs boson?

Any other information is good to post as well, since I just write a 6 page essay on this I know a bit but I always want to know more.
