I had a conversation with a friend who talked about how he loved the Legend of Zelda series, especially Ocarina of Time. I've only ever played Majora's Mask and one of the GBA games. (I think it was Seasons)
I told him I didn't really care for them and I think the series is overrated and none of the games could ever keep my attention for longer than fifteen minutes. He thinks it's because that I started playing Majora's Mask first before Ocarina of Time. I don't really understand why that is, and he couldn't really explain why.

I LOVED Ocarina of Time, just about anyone who isn't a 14 year old COD fanboy will say the same, alot of it is just nostalgia though. OOT is just one of those games alot of people loved as a kid, so when they hear someone say they never played it or didn't like it they tend to freak out, as much as I hate admit it I do too. I guess because it was such a big part of some peoples childhood that when they hear someone didn't like it it feels like an insult. It's like saying someones favourite childhood toy is stupid.

I've played 5 of them, in this order:

Ocarina of Time -> Great game, even when I replayed it prior to Twilight Princess's release.
Majora's Mask -> Liked it but played it right after OoT and was a bit burnt out on Zelda and never finished it. Considering starting it up again soon.
Twilight Princess -> Liked it enough to play it twice (about two years apart).
Wind Waker -> Only had it for a few days from a friend (borrowed his GC copy and played it on my Wii), but I quite liked what I played (only a few hours).
Skyward Sword -> Started it a couple of weeks ago. Played 90 mins or so. Really didn't care for it at all. However, that was basically all tutorial and setting things up... so I don't think it's fair to judge it entirely based on that.

So overall... yes? I suppose so. I haven't really loved any of them since the N64 era, so it's far from my favourite series, but as long as Skyward Sword gets (a lot) better, I'll still be able to say that they're a pretty sure thing for at least a "good" game experience.

<==== Of course I like it but I don't think everyone should like the series
I myself have played quite a lot of the games in the series[footnote]Legend of Zelda (NES), Zelda 2 Adventure of Link (NES), A link to the Past (SNES, GBA), Link's Awakening (GB, GBC), Oracle of Seasons/Ages (GBC), Ocarina of Time (N64, GC), Majora's Mask (N64, GC), Windwaker (GC), Minish Cap (GBA) and Twilight Princess (GC, Wii), Note that the platforms listed are the ones I've played the game on and not all the ones in which the game is available, they also represent different versions and not compatibility.[/footnote] and I pretty much have liked all of them, I don't think every single one is awesome [small](Twilight Princess was mediocre at best, well at least IMO)[/small] as for what game you should try, IDK the one I think is the best is Majora's Mask and you already said you don't like that, my second favourite is Windwaker but for what you're saying I just don't think Zelda is your kind of game.

Majora's Mask was the first Zelda game I ever played, and I instantly fell in love with it. The second Zelda game I got was Oracle of Seasons, which I really didn't care for, but it did nothing to quell my love for the series. I guess it's just not your cup of tea.

I played Ocarina of Time and I wondered what the fuss was about, I do not like the Zelda series. Just didn't live up to the hype

My question is, who doesn't like The Legend of Zelda. Nearly everyone who has been properly invested in the series has adored it, even Nintendo zealots (like my Uncle who got me in to the series long ago). The same with the Metroid series to a much lesser extent.

Ocarina of time is one of those games, where I can ditch the nostalgia glasses, and still play it to this day, and it will still be as fresh as it was fourteen years ago (Jesus Christ, it's been that long?!).

In that regard, I like to think of Ocarina of Time as a Forty-Odd Cougar. She has been past her prime for a long time, but hell, she can definitely still get a young man excited.

Also, for the record I kinda disliked Manjora's Mask, so perhaps you started out on the wrong foot, play Ocarina of time, or Link to the Past (even if you have to trade your Thomas the Tank Lunchbox to play it) and then come back to me.

I like most of the games. I like how the storyline changes. But its all pretty much the same now and its getting kinda tedious.
Princess missing -> link only one who can save the day -> Must get a special sword and item -> Travel to temple after temple completing puzzles to find those items -> fight big boss -> rescue princess -> ???? -> Profit.
I enjoy the games, but id love it if they mixed it up a little bit.

I played A Link to the Past first (I from the SNES era) and yeah I do like the game series despite how typical it can get (eg how most of the bosses weakness) .

Well, to be fair Zelda wasn't missing in Ocarina of time, she just fled from Ganondolf later on along with Impa, and disguised herself as Shiek to help the hero of time several years later.

Neither in Wind Waker when it was your sister who was missing, and Zelda doesn't come into it until much later on.

In Twilight Princess, Princess Zelda was stuck in Twilight, but not exactly missing just confided to the castle along with everyone else stuck in the Twilight.

In Link to the Past, she was imprisoned, but you release her at the beginning of the game.

Manjora's Mask, Links Awakening and the Oracle games don't even have a Zelda in them.

In fact, the only game where Zelda was "Kidnapped" and missing, is in the first Zelda, and Skyward Sword's when she was not exactly a princess as such, as the game is based before Hyrule's creation.

Now that I think about it, you are right...
But generally, something happens to a female character that you have to help out, whether they have been kidnapped, fled, sent to another dimension, or are just plain stubborn and wont go home.
Minor change, but still same sort of thing.

They're pretty fun but...well, I have never actually finished any of them. I just get bored before the end somewhere, then I come back a few months later having forgotten where I am and I'll start from the begining again. It's wierd. They're still fun though, if somewhat formulaic.

Not really, Zelda is the one that aids Link in most of the games. For example, Zelda gives Link the Ocarina of time, in OOT, and also disguise herself as Shiek to give advice to the hero of time. Zelda gives advice to Link how he can destroy Zant in Twilight Princess as well.

She also help's Link in Both Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess with the Final Battle against Ganon, not bad for a Damsel in Distress eh?

I'm not really a fan. I've played Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask but I never really got into them. To me they're not the amazing great games that people always talk about. They're good and I can see why people like the games but I just played and finished them for the reason of having played Legend of Zelda games.
Maybe I didn't like them that much because I didn't play any as a kid or because people overhyped them so much that my expectations were too high.

Excluding handheld titles, I've played them all. And hell yes do I love 'em. Though can understand why some might not like it.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and tastes. If you're don't like the Zelda series, then that's fine. I don't like RTS's, and others love 'em. Simple as that.

Isn't it more than a little hypocritical to call the entire series overrated when you've only played 2 games (one having made so little impact that you can't even name it with confidence) of the series?

I've been playing them since I was a wee lad and had the Legend of Zelda in it's shining gold cartridge on the NES. I've played nearly every one of them; excluding the ones on the GBA and the CDI.

I'd say I'm a fan of the series. Wind Waker was interesting and I actually loved Twilight Princess (a lot). Skyward Sword wasn't particularly great IMO (though it wasn't bad).

OP I don't really know what this thread is about. You can not like Zelda, it's okay.

Absolutely. The series is as a whole is fantastic particularly:

A Link to the Past
Wind Waker
Zelda 2: Adventure of Link
Twilight Princess
Majora's Mask
Ocarina of Time
Minish Cap
Phantom Hourglass

Despite those great games (listed in the order in which I like them), I find the series is getting old. I don't mean to say it needs to evolve and become a Skyrim clone or anything. Just that the style is one that I'm losing interest in as I get older. Much like how I've lost interest in Mario games since around Mario 64.
