Hello fellow escapists

So, wether it is EA caving in to peer pressure, or Jack Thompson smuggly claiming victory and telling us to go to hell, there is a lot about the new MOH game that should legitimatly piss gamers off. I am no fan of the Taliban, but what i am even less fond of is cowards, censorship and political correctness bullshit, so let's do something about it.
Let's show these busy bodies that they are not welcome in our games and that we have more power than they really want to admit.

So, here's the plan. Don't boycott MOH yet, buy the game and when you sign up for the multiplayer, make your name "Taliban-(whatever)" or "(whatever your name is)-Taliban" or just squeeze 'Taliban' into your name somewhere. It won't change EA or ack Thompson, but it will show them that gamers don't like being pissed on very much (at least not without the courtesy of calling it rain).

I am sick of games being the battleground of people who never bother to play them. So let's show them, in whatever way we can, that it is they who should be banned from our games, not legitimate content. Escapists... its time to go to WAR!

Who's with me?

What the hell does it matter? The only thing EA did was change the name. The content is exactly the same, right? So why do we care? It's like if someone decided Halo's Firefight mode was offensive for some reason, and Bungie changed the name to, say, Wave. Exactly the same thing, but with a different name.

The point is, this is just silly, Jack Thompson is a retard, and why should we really care so much about all this?

Ever heard of Scientology?

OT: I'll probably do this. I fucking hate censorship for any reason. Granted, I pre-ordered MoH on the 360. So I can only do it if I can add a clan-tag.

You've not been around the internet very long have you? I mean, sure, this idea is dumb, but Number 1? The dumbest among all others? King of Dumb Ideas?

Nah, not even close.

OP: If you want to get EA's attention, have you, your friends, anyone, write letters. Don't send e-mails. Don't make an online petition. Send them actual, physical paper letters with ink and everything.

I find it's far more effective to get your point across and shows a level of devotion to your cause above that of signing an internet petition.

This is 47% dumber than scientology.

No exaggeration, I literally discovered the internet yesterday.

And TC: This shit doesn't matter. Get over it. It's a video game.

And you found my favorite pet peeve!

It is, in fact, "just a game", that doesn't mean that people can't have feelings, thoughts, ideas, etc, involving said game. My car is "just a car" that doesn't mean I don't really enjoy my car, and if you banged your door into it I wouldn't be pissed off.
This is 'just a website' but if it go shut down you'd probably be a bit bummed no?

Well let's turn this around then. Yes, it's "just a video game"....to YOU. To people who have lost family to the war, it's harder to make that argument. All they see is you being entertained by the very thing that killed their son, husband, father, etc.

Now you compare the renaming of the Taliban to damage to your car or an entire website getting shut down. Do you really think this is even in the same ballpark? This has (or should have, at any rate) ZERO impact on your ability to enjoy the game. It doesn't change any of the gameplay, and it only affects a part of the game that has no narrative anyway. Simply put, there's no reason why the "bad guys" SHOULD be so accurately named, since it doesn't add anything to the game. We're still talking about something which, at its root, boils down to "red team" and "blue team". What added enjoyment are you getting by being allowed to play as "the Taliban"? None, I sincerely hope!

Getting damage to your car costs you money to fix, and an entire website shutting down, well only having the game canceled completely would be comparable to that.

Dumber than aromatic toilet paper? I mean, you wipe your ass with it so why does it have to smell nice?

On topic: I would do it. But not because I want to make a stand, I don't care. I just want to piss off Jack Thompson.

I'm guessing I may have misunderstood what you meant with 'it's just a video game' in my original quote...

I'm saying that it irks me when people say "it's just a game" or "it's just a *thing*", because it obviously isn't just that, or there would be no discussion.

My intent was not to compare my dinged door to the loss of a family member, that's insane. Again, I think there might be some confusion between us.

On topic: Putting 'Taliban' in your name will probably just paint an ugly picture of gamers. A much better option is the one of writing letters with well thought out arguments beyond what is typically posted on gaming boards.

By that logic, the american soldiers should be renamed as well so that no has to deal with american forces getting killed, besides nobody really cares about playing as american forces do they.

But yes, while in the multiplayer it doesn't add anything to it to have them named the Taliban, the fact that they are gets you thinking about the war and I think that is the point. It may not come up while your playing the game, but it does make you think about it afterwards and changing the name cuts this down. At least thats how I see it.

That sounds like a dandy little compromise.

yeah, but these kinds of people already think we are horrible, so i don't see any harm in doing something that will piss them off a little more, or even show them that we won't tolerate thier bullshit without dishing out some of our own.

Well, no, you probably didn't misunderstand me too much. I did pretty much mean what you read. On the larger scale, video games are pretty insignificant. And one small aspect of a video game is even more insignificant. My point was that, however important you think this is, it's still little more than a source of amusement for you, whereas it means something far more to families of fallen soldiers.

My point was that many gamers seem to be more concerned about their entertainment than they are about these unfortunate families. If it takes a tiny insignificant adjustment of a video game to set so many others at ease, I'm all for it. Like I said, it's something that should have zero impact on your ability to enjoy the game, but if it makes them feel better, what's the harm?

It should be stressed again that we're talking about multiplayer skins. We're not really talking about video games as a whole. If they change the bad guys in the single player game, we're having a whole different argument. This is simply about your ability to play as "the Taliban" versus "generic bad guy name".

People complain too much about political correctness or censorship or whatnot, but whatever happened to just being nice? Instead of getting all up in arms because your video game got changed a little bit, can't you look at it from the other side and realize that, other malevolent motivations aside, what EA did could simply be seen as a kind gesture for people who are hurting?
