I was wondering how many of my fellow Escapists play Magic the Gathering.

Also to add more to this thread, for those of you who have played Magic, what's your favorite flavor text and why?

I would have to go with either

Hatred outlives the hateful.
Because it's awesome, and fits the card perfectly.

OR

Masters of the arcane savor a delicious irony. Their study of deep and complex arcana leads to such a simple end: the ability to say merely yes or no.
Once again, because it's awesome and fits the card perfectly.

EDIT: For those of you who don't know what Magic the Gathering is, Magic is essentially the first Trading Card Game. A notable difference between Magic and most other card games is that the cards trump the rules - if a card contradicts a rule of the game, the card overrules it. This results in a very dynamic game that has lasted for decades[sup]1[/sup]. [sup]1[/sup] Specifically since 1993, so almost 2 decades.

I used to play. I don't know what my favorite flavor text it (probably something from Unhinged, but I'm too lazy to look up the card list right now), but my favorite cards are:

Yep, an old Vintage player here. Favourite flavour is probably on Goblin Bombardment.

"One mogg to aim the catapult, one mogg to steer the rock."

I play it, and I completely blame LoadingReadyRun and El Goonish Shive for it.

Currently running a pure white, and a green/blue deck. Green is mostly Infect while Blue is mostly countering. It's working well.

As for flavour text, I can't go past the Goblin Balloon Brigade: "The enemy is getting too close! Quickly, inflate the toad!"

I play, and with skill.

My favorite text lately is Thrun's- His crime was silence, and now he suffers it eternally.

It's awesome because Thrun betrayed his people, and chose to sit back and watch as they were destroyed. Now he is the only Troll left in the world, and he is completely alone.

My favorite text from a while ago is Doran, The Siege Tower: Each year that passes rings you inwardly with memory and might. Wield your heart, and the world will tremble.

For flavor text I would still say my favorite card of all time. Consumpative Goo.
"Silent as fog and relentless as plague, it is wet, creeping death."

The whole card just oozes flavor. It consumes parts of other creatures to make itself stronger. Just love everything about the card.

So many good goblin flavor quotes.

Lots of good ones in Unglued and Unhinged too.

Yussir, I play. Didn't start too long ago, but I'm having a blast (and spending almost ALL my money...)

There are lots of flavor texts that I like. Aura Gnarlid's and Pacifism's are the ones that come to mind.

"Kill a gnarlid with your first blow, or it'll cheerfully show you how it's done."

"For the first time in his life, Grakk felt a little warm and fuzzy inside."

Gotta love 'em.

I played it a bit, but had no one to really play except my friend so I grew tired of it and stuck with Yu-Gi-Oh!

Though, I'd play in a heartbeat if Trogdor the Burninator was a real card.

Trogdor the Burninator
Tap 1 Mountain, Burninate the Countryside
Tap 1 Mountain, Burninate the Peasants
Flying
9/9

I don't play but it looks fun. I do know that I picked up a booster pack in a Target a while back and I liked the description the cards gave the monsters.

I would like to know what deck theme I should get if I do start playing, and where in Mississippi can I find someone to play against. I seriously don't want this to be like Yu-Gi-Oh, tons of people with the cards, but no one wants to play them.

Yes, it was a waste of a pefectly good dragon themed deck that I never got to battle with.

If it's anything like Duel Masters, I'd play it.

I love the flavour text on Goblin Offensive;
"They certainly are..."
Simple and funny.

As for playing, yes. I have 3 decks I built out of specifically chosen cards, A Commander deck, a Hydra Deck (Screw you, Deathtouch!) and an Eldrazi Deck (Emrakul with an Eldrazi Conscription on him, Anyone?), as well as a counter deck that I made by throwing cards I had left over from draft games together.
Guess which one has the highest win rate?
Yes. The random amalgam of cards.

Yes since BETA. I have stopped a few times but always come back. As for quotes "Ach! Hans, Run! It's the Lhurgoyf!" - Saffi Eriksdotter, last words. From the green classic beast (OK the type on the card is not beast but still) Lhurgoyf.

Ah, yes. I played Hassle: The Dorkening once...

In seriousness, I was about 13 when the game got really big, so I played for a while.

I did always preferred RPGs to CCGs though. I wouldn't even say Magic was the best CCG, INWO probably gets that vote, with Chez Geek a close second. (not really a collectible, but so many packs came out I think it deserves at least an honourable mention)

Whole again in honor and horn.

Anybody who knows the card that matches the flavor text gets an auto-high five, and knows the name of my favorite EDH general.

I've played off and on since I was 6. I have 7 decks currently running one monocolor of every color except blue (Never quite mastered blue, too much thinking). My favorite deck is mono red and it's almost completely burn cards..... and the Shivan Dragon.

Favorite Flavor Text: Goblin Grenade

As an additional cost to Goblin Grenade, sacrifice a goblin. Goblin Grenade deals 5 damage to target creature or player.

"I don't suppose we could teach them to throw the cursed things?"

"Chub toad, chub toad

Or you?ll run no more."

Goblins don't know the meaning of the word "tactics"?or the word "meaning," for that matter.

Those are my two favorites

Used to play up till about six months ago, then my brain started to wander and i went into other pursuits, but while i did play i mostly did red/green, and the last deck i played with was green infect. Nothing quite as satisfying as putting down a harmless little 2/2 infect and then 3 turns, and 2 cards that make it a at least a 13/13 with trample later, i destroy someone in one turn. Now i want to play magic again, damn you good sir, i have to find my cards now.
