Poll: Male Tongue Piercing - Is it weird?

I am a 17 year old straight male and upon telling my friends that I was interested in getting my tongue pierced I was met with some reluctance and mockery. I can take a joke but I got the distinct impression that they thought it was a strange idea for a guy to get his tongue pierced. What do all you escapists think? Is it normal or weird for a guy to get his tongue pierced and why?

Did they mean it was a strange idea for you to get it pierced because you're a guy or just because it's your tongue and ouch!

I know two or three guys with tongue piercings, I don't think I know any girls with tongue piercings. Never at all heard of it being a gender specific thing.

Much as I think they look kind of cool on either sex, I'd have thought it'd get in the way of kissing and other fun things that tongues are useful for. >_>

Well since the perception among some is that the only reason to get your tongue pierced is that it makes fellatio feel extra awesome, you expressing an interest in getting it unsurprisingly causes some of your friends to make cheap jokes about it.
