Morning all.

So as you may or may not have heard, there's this game coming out at the end of the month; it's sort of a space soap opera thing with guns, and the first chapter of the trilogy did alright for itself a few years ago.

Anyway;
It has a Collector's Edition, with some special armour [http://www.analoghype.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Mass-Effect-2-Collectors-armor.jpg], a special weapon, a comic, an art book, a making-of DVD, and the Cerberus Network Membership card. More on the italics later. It's also meant to come in a tin case [http://www.analoghype.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Mass-effect-2-collectors-edition-box-art.jpg], but the UK version seems strangely void of that little addition.

The regular edition is the game disc in a box. The cover art [http://images.play.com/covers/10267221x.jpg] is somewhat crap but then, I don't much intend on looking at it for long.

Now, those italics;
This here Cerberus Network card was initially the main selling point of the Collector's Edition, for me at least. Recently, however, it's been revealed that all new copies of Mass Effect 2 will have this card.

Now, whilst nothing like the farce that is the Darksiders pre-order bonus clusterf*ck, it stands that I could still receive special armour and weapons from pre-ordering the regular editions; the coveted Terminus armour [http://www.gamestop.com/gs/images/bonus/ME2_bonusLG1.jpg] with the Blackstorm heavy weapon - a weapon with an effect unlike anything else in the game [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDwKH-n8RHs]... or some red thing that boosts conversation bonuses or something, I dunno the Inferno armour [http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/promos/Mass_Effect2_Inferno-Armor.jpg], with bonuses to negotiation and 'powers', so I assume biotics.
Of course, separate retail chains have their 'exclusives' so I would have to choose between the two.

Buuuuuuuuuut.
It's been suggested that this Terminus armour and the other one whose name escapes me the Inferno armour will eventually become DLC... whereas the Collector's Edition armour will not.

However.
All three of these armours could potentially become useless during endgame, yet that weapon might remain quite the fancy dan.

Argh! WHAT DO?
Any ideas, fellow Escapist-type people? For comparison, the Collector's Edition is about £15 more than the regular. The price doesn't really factor into it but I'm not buying three copies of the game.

AH CRAP, I accidently picked regular. I meant Collector's, the special armor, the special collector's (the new enemy species, not the edition) ray gun type weapon. I preordered it from EA, so I didn't get the Terminus armor from Gamestop, but I did manage to snag the collector's edition so that's damn awesome.

Okay... I suppose I should've said I'm really looking for reasons NOT to cancel my CE order and grab Terminus armour instead.

I bought the collectors edition for Gta 4, i looked at the art book once, the bag broke and i have never used the lockbox. Although the rockstar keychain thingy is still attached to my spongebob and housekeys.

So yeah, collectors editions tend not to be worth it in my opinion.

I was just saying how Gamestop ran out of Collector's Edition pre orders, so I had to preorder from the EA website, so I wasn't able to get the Gamestop preorder bonuses (Terminus armor, and the blackstorm weapon) but I still got the preorder, so I'm happy about that.

Collectors Edition all the way! I've been waiting for this game since I finished the first one, and I really support what these guys are doing, so if an extra $20 will get me some kick-ass stuff, then why not?

Yes, me too... minus the actually using the keychain. This is also in the back of my mind - do I want to pay more money for more dust-gatherers?

Because it might not be so kick-ass in the end.

Did you get it before or on the 24th of December during that awesome sale where expedited shipping is free?

I say this because I had to buy it on EA too. But only because the moron got my reserve wrong at Gamestop. First time that happened too, but I called corporate and they said that I can call them on the day it's out and get my key emailed to me for the PC version.

Anyways, what's this thread about? Oh right, I'd say keep your Collector's Edition pre-order. You lucky son-of-a-gun...

1) The regular edition's box art is FAR worse than "somewhat crap," it may be the worst box art I've seen in years. A five year old girl has better taste in art, and could probably draw something better.

2) The armors offers from Gamestop are more likely than not a pile of poo. I saw the stats for one of the armor sets (either Terminus or Inferno, I can't recall) and it was like +5 to one stat, +5 to another, etc. They'll be like the gold lancers from Gears 2 - shiny, pretty, and proof that you got the game earlier than everyone else, but no more useful.

3) The price difference is minor enough to not regret dropping the extra coin. It's not like a set of night-vision goggles or mini helmet that makes the game $80 more. It's a small extra cost, so better to be safe than sorry (and wish you had extra stuff later on).

In conclusion, get the collector's edition.

Lemme put it this way: I take the "Collector" part of the CE seriously.

I wonder if the last option is referencing what I think it is. If it is, then that is frighteningly awesome.

I may be the only person who doesn't loathe that box art.

I mean, look at the art for ME1 [http://cache.kotaku.com/assets/resources/2007/01/MassEffectBox.jpg].
Apart from Garrus and the bizarrely-sexy Ashley, it's just a mess.

Still, the rest of your post was pointful.

What is the network thing, though? You never went into detail about what it does, just saying how you were excited for it.
That's the thing - nobody knows yet. Bioware is remaining tight-lipped on what exactly it does, but the simple fact that every copy now comes with it has diminished its lustre somewhat.
[Edit: Speculation is that it is used to 'register' your copy of the game to, I assume, the in-game version of the DLC store. This is supposedly to prevent pirates and/or hamper the used games business]

It's been speculated on the Mass Effect 2 forums now that the Cerburus Network card is availible to everyone, not just the CE. We're waiting for a confirmation. To the guy above, ME2 comes out 26th Jan (NAmerica/Canada)and 29th (Europe). And no, OP you are not the only one who doesn't loathe the box art, i quite like it myself.
