I've been a big metal gear fan since I first got MGS1 back in 1999, and have loved the storyline's. Rambling and convoluted as they are, I've loved how they start with gritty military realism and slowly but surely crowbar soft sci-fi nonsense and bipedal mechs into it. Sadly I opted for an Xbox360 a few years ago on the grounds that it was cheaper (The fact I am now on my third possibly means i made the wrong choice but what the hey) and thus have not sampled MGS4 first hand yet. But recently I noticed that all cutscenes were on youtube and watched the whole lot in a sitting.

And I've got to say, I was massively dissapointed in how things wrapped up.
SPOILERS AHOY

First of all the question of "Who Are The Patriots?"
Okay, so, Zero and Big Boss I can dig. Following the first law of MGS that it all comes back to Big Boss in the end. But, Sigint? Paramedic? with the inclusion of EVA and Ocelot Its basicly just every character from MGS3 who isn't dead at the end. And Para-medic? The nice cheery girl who knows all about mushrooms and retro movies? Something about this just doesn't click. Konami obviosly thought this too and decided to say the paramedic went on to become Dr Clarke. The scientist who created the original ninja out of Grey Fox. But in MGS1, Dr Clarke is clearly referred to as a HE. Well known by Foxhound members such as Naomi and the Colonel. SO they just never knew The Dr was actually a woman?
And also Sigint. Who is apparently now the DARPA Chief as well. But if this is the case, then he must be about 70 in the events of MSG1. Why isn't he retired? Why would anyone be surprised if a 70 year old man suddenly dies? FOXDIE? More like a stroke.
I'm surprised the Patriots didn't turn out to formed by Rose and Johnny.

Ocelot
Okay, while it's perfectly acceptable and already well documented in previous games that Ocelot is an agent of the Patriots, being one of the founding top members? If this is the case then during the events of MGS1 & 2, he is the only active member, (Zero Probably all ready a vegetable and god only knows what EVA is up to at the time) and therefor supreme under-the-table ruler of America. It is revealed after the MGS1 credits that he is working for the president, revealed in MGS2 to be Solidus. But why if he is in fact the final active member? Plus why is he having to do all the leg work himself? Can't he get the AI's to do it?
Ocelot's character was great as the bad guy you always knew was planning double cross the other bad guys, but he always felt like the lacky for the real culprit, Not the man Himself.
And why would he hypnotize himself into thinking he was Liquid? In MGS2 he seemed to want liquid as far away from his brain as possible.

The Return Of Big Boss
So Big Boss was rebuilt with parts of Liquid and Solidus. Why? Just so he could have poignant death speech with Snake? Was in worth it for a 10 minite chat and a smoke? And why, IF his whole body has been rebuilt and great length from the charred remains snake left it in MG2 SS, did they not bother to PUT HIS BLOODY EYE BACK IN?
They should've just made him a ninja. Would have been shitloads better than Raiden.

Beauty & The Beast Unit
After the glory of Foxhound and the Cobra's, they didn't stand a chance. "RAAAGE RAAAGE" grow up you slag.

Also the tone of the cutscene's has changed quite a bit. All the stuff with EVA holding the apple "I took the forbidden fruit from the snake" Wow. How deep and metaphorical. I cringed so hard I though my eyes would pop. Same as when Meryl and Johnny had there little romantic moment for half an hour whilst being shot at by 100 heavily armed geezers.

The argument that I've never actually played the game is perfectly valid. Maybe there was a Codec conversation that explains all this that I'm not aware of. But I'm just dissapointed that one of few series' that I've been a loyal fanboy of for 10 years has got it so wrong. I felt they tried to answer too many questions at once, and thus the answers weren't satisfying. The could have kept some of them to answered in peace walker or een the raiden game. Or possibly even the blatantly upcoming "Metal Gear Solid 5: Akiba has a Shit".

I've never played them and never plan to. From what I've heard no-one has a clue about the story of those games, even Hideo Kojima said he has trouble understanding it, and he is the lead writer/creator - come to think of it I think he's the only writer.

They then spend cut-scenes that are like 3/4 of an hour long explaining a convuluted plot that still doesn't make sense. I wonder what the playtime:cut-scene ratio is in terms of minutes?

I think you have two problems, both of which you mention:

1) Haven't played MGS4.
2 (and the big one) Fan boy.

It's so much easier to enjoy things when you're NOT a fan boy.

Personally, my brothers and I all enjoyed the story. Do we joke about Kojima being bat-shit insane? Yup. We do that too. Taking a step back from fanaticism and just playing the game is generally the best way to, ya know: ACTUALLY enjoy things.
