Who of the big 4 is the true Thrash Metal King? Oh man its like choosing between children for me as a huge thrash metal head. So out of the big four I rank them from top to bottom and the top is going to be.....

MEGADETH!!!

Followed by Slayer:

Then Anthrax:

Lastly Metallica:

I'd argue Metallica is the king because of how popular they got and how popular they still are.

Personal preference I prefer Megadeth (Rust in Peace is my favorite thrash album).

I am not as into the genre, not that I mind it, but my answer is based in gaming.

(Though I prefer the in-game version more)

Gotta go with Megadeth.

Not only is Dave Mustaine is shredding legend, he's also a damn fine lyricist.

I guess it's a toss-up between Megadeth/Metallica. I've never particularly been a fan of Slayer and I barely know any songs by Anthrax.

I have to go with Slayer, their style was arguably more influential on extreme metal styles that emerged in the late 80s and 90s such as death metal and black metal. Reign in Blood is the perfect metal album, it's so concise and intense and it was so ahead of its time. The production also sounds so damn gnarly even though it came out in 86.

That said, I don't think any of these bands have held up over the years. In terms of classic thrash bands, Testament and Sodom have been a lot more consistent and in terms of thrash in general Vektor's raised the bar so high with their small but fantastic discography.

Actually now that I've mentioned it, it seems the thrash bands I enjoy the most are the ones that skew more towards death metal and black metal. There seems to be a special sweet spot there.

Even with all the stupid shit the band has pulled (well a certain someone), Metallica still easily has my favourite collection of thrash metal songs. Their second, third and fourth albums are still amazing in their own right, with a couple of those songs seen as not only the best of metal, but held above most other popular bands too.

Though I don't believe popular means quality at all, I love Master Of Puppets and One. And that S&M concert is one of my favourite live albums.

I really like Megadeth too, but they never became that dramatic (I think that is the right word to use) as Metallica. Though Holy Wars... The Punishment Due is an awesome number. And I like some Slayer (pretty simple stuff), and Anthrax I haven't gone through yet.

Slayer. Anthrax I'm not familiar with, and what I've heard from Megadeth always sounded rather limp to me. I've never understood the huge fetish the rock world seems to have for Metallica. They've only released two albums in the current century, one of which was (to my understanding) universally panned (and I hate the St. Anger title track), and one received "meh" reviews at best. I almost never hear rock stations play anything from them post-1991.

Slayer still has proper energy even in their new stuff, and have made some of the most vicious metal songs I know of.

Of those four, Megadeth. I enjoy both them and (early) Metallica. I've never been a huge fan of Slayer, and I'm not familiar enough with Anthrax to comment.

I dunno. They all have their different flavours to appreciate, but they also all have annoying niggles I don't like, even Iron Maiden. Eh...I feel a little apathetic about it all. Maybe if any of them made something worthwhile recently that didn't sound so homogeneous, it would be easier to pick. Can I just throw them in a blender and pray for a new Tool album instead? Hell even Black Label Society too.

I don't care for metal much, because it's usually either too po-faced and worthy (IE all of the bands given as options) or too knowingly camp. Really only Ghost strikes a balance that I like.

I've not been into metal since my teens, but do Sepultura count? 'Cause Chaos AD is pretty hard to beat. And it had a gorgeous acoustic piece recorded in a Welsh castle, I remember. So, yeah. They were something - a little more textured, culturally, and more convincingly political.

Never cared for Anthrax or Slayer at all, but the other two had some great albums, at least in the early/mid eras. I picked Megadeth, largely for Rust In Peace ("Military intelligence, two words combined that can't make sense"); more dynamic/inventive bordering on the playful, and less pompous than Metalica back then - great melodies, razor sharp production (Metallica's production was always a little--- muddy, leading up to their eponymously titled album).
