I loved MGS and the sequels. And while I admit it didn't make any sense in the middle of the series, when 4 set out to explain everything, it left me totally satisfied. But Peace walker has negated all the good of the series with every bugbear I have found in gaming.
Quick time events are the worst idea in gaming (only Resident Evil 4 did it right) in my personal opinion, with a cutscene, fundamentally taking a break from gameplay, now forcing pointless button bashing upon the player. Furthermore the tedious acting, scripting and story itself needs little to make the Peace walker experience any worse (David Hayter seems truly bored throughout). Kojima set out to tell the untold story of the Cold war, without realising that there was good reason the events of 1974 hasn't resonated through the 21st century.
Gameplay is slow paced and repetitive, with the destructible scenery only resulting in the game having collision detection equivalent to that of a PSX title, pre MGS1. Perhaps my expectations were too high, the initial gleam of the metal textures and Big Boss sporting some decent tranfer maps looking to have really optimised the questionable choice of platform.
This is the series that not only got me into gaming, but even inspired me to study 3D animation. But this title has left a sour taste, and a opinon of Big Boss being a weak character surrounded by a cast that only benefits him by being truly awful.
