Seriously, am I the only person who is seriously pissed about this? I can understand my own stupidity for apparently not seeing the memo that this was added, I can understand its use, even its usefulness, but what I do not understand and do indeed protest to is my inability to TURN THE DAMN THING OFF!!! I called support and waited half an hour, in which time no one saw fit to get to me. I just sent an email, so hopefully that will help the situation. But enough about me. Anyone else's thoughts?

I feel exactly the same and was thinking about this earlier. I really don't see why you need to phone fucking support and talk to someone just to make it so they don't automatically take money from you...

My main problem is that I don't have any money, I keep buying my Live subs with visa gift cards and such, so when it tries to auto-update I get like 9000 emails about it. Pain in the ass.

This is why I use pre-paid cards. No fucking way in hell I'm giving Microsoft my debit card details. Also you can get some good deals with them.

Don't most online memberships renew automatically? Why is this such a big deal for microsoft? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

I'm glad I havent used my card to purchase anything on there, although when I first got it I almost bought some points using my debit card, thank god I changed my mind.

It's one of those idiotic things they put in the fine print, and dont give you an option to just say "don't automatically renew, I want to buy my subscription on my own". When I sold games at a certain store, I remember several people coming in complaining about it, and having extreme difficulty getting it turned off. Some complained that the process of turning it off could take 2 or 3 months, with the xbox live still updating even as they were trying to shut it down. It's probably one of those things where customer support is told to "help them, but draw it out as long as possible so we get more money" :\

Seriously, its only a matter of time till someone snaps and sues the hell out of them (which they'll get out of with tons of lawyers and fine print, but it's still wrong)

Like I said, I understand the merits to such a system, but I can't turn it off. It is infuriatingly difficult to cancel, deliberately so, and I really just have to protest to that.

The only way to cancel an Xbox Live subscription is to call customer support, wait for them to actually talk to you, and then go through loops of information to cancel it.
There aren't any online cancellation features, and you can't remove your debit card as a payment method without cancelling the membership, so it is unnecessarily frustrating.

Most also make it pretty easy to stop. With Microsoft, you either have to call support, or go through they're fucking painful-to-browse-through website in order to find the page that lets you choose whether or not to stop it updating.

Point is, Microsoft is making something that should be easy to do really, really fucking hard and annoying to do.

OH ok, then yeah I agree. I forgot how much of a pain in the ass it is to cancel an xbox live sub, been running mine for a few years straight.

But I do have awful memories of trying to make it stop when I switched to a different credit card.

Yeah, I don't really want to jump through the phone hoops required to remove my card information and stop the auto-renewal. I also don't really use XBL, so I don't know why I still bother to waste that money every year.

It is very bad for us to be obligated to call customer support and deal with all the information in order to just not get billed for a renewal. It's technically good business though because you might at least sneak one by the customer without them noticing, and it keeps them hooked to you for a wee bit longer.

I haven't used it in quite a while, but I remember being annoyed that they felt they could auto-renew and take my money.

I think I remember(confidence inspiring, I know)that you can disable it fairly easily on the site. xbox.com. Log-in > "My xbox"(or "my account", or whatever it is now) > "Membership level" > set auto-renewal to off.

Unless they've changed it, this should work. Good luck.
