Poll: Morality And You

"Morality" choices seem to be becoming all the rage lately, what with Bethesda, Bioware, and other companies of their kind essentially forcing gamers to "pick a side." It's possible to stay fairly "neutral" of course, in most games, but I would wager that a majority of gamers tend to go more or less light, or more or less dark.

The poll is which you tend toward.

For discussion, What are your thoughts on "morality" issues in video games? Do the choices you make reflect on you as a person - or do you feel they reflect on your "other side"? Are you a nice person that goes the Tenpenny Tower Route? Are you a sour person that gruffly mutters "you're welcomes" while saving kittens from trees?

To quote Dark Helmet, "So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

That is my gaming motto.

I'll be honest, it varies. In Fable, it was fun as hell being evil but in Dragon Age: Origins I'm trying to be good so my team doesn't hate me.

Mainly good with the occasional bad deed. My character in Kotor was completely good, while my Fallout 3 character blew up Megaton.

I like it when the games don't gauge my level of morality. I like being able to choose what I think is best, because most people are morally neutral. Dragon Age allowed me to not get rebuked by anyone except my team, which I prefer.

This is a good point; it can vary game by game. I picked what I did - mostly good - on how I played my Dragon Age and Fallout characters. On the flip side from you, though, I embraced the power of the Dark Side on KoToR.

Good, with flashes of terrible evil. Normally, in Fallout 3, I'm a nice kitten-saver, but occasionally, I go out and shoot innocents for their stuff.

I used to go all evil, but lately I've been being a good boy, for example, I'm a Paragon.

The most neutral shade of grey I can find. I like to keep my options open whilst being a dick or a saviour whenever I can. I usually play unlawful though because following the law is for the less badass.

"You're welcome for saving Megaton. Ooh, that gun looks pretty, sheriff. And I dig your hat. Why don't you come over behind this building..."

Mostly chaotic. I take the issues on a case-by-case style.

I'll usually go out of my way and make a decision against what my "morals" would usually dictate if it makes the good looking lady companion happy.

More like: "I just saved Megaton, time to go hunting for a Scavenger or two, find some easy caps..." You can't really kill the Sheriff and get away with it (easily).

I have no problem with a morality system because it lets players identify with the main character even more AND with the introduction of the "middle ground" in morality choices nowadays that "immersion" that the player gets whilst making a choice is increased even more.

I killed the sheriff easily, I snuck into his house at night, and assassinated him with the chainsaw knife.

OT: Aside from usually playing through the game on both sides, it depends on the game for me. I usually go for good when there's something huge at stake(e.g. Mass Effect), but when I'm not really given some really big save-the-world type goal, I usually roll like a dick in a pimp suit.

I usually stay very good on my first playthrough but with some games I will go all bad on the second.
