What do you think is the most important aspect to a good game? For me its story. If I can not connect with the world the game takes place in then I can't get full enjoyment out of a game.

Depends on the game.

Story doesn't matter much, for me, in a shoot-em-up and graphics don't matter much to me in a story centric game (though it can help).

No one quality can make a game great. At least in relation to others.

One does not need story for good multiplayer, nor do you need the best gameplay for a good single player campaign/story. Some qualities can work great standalone but overall a game must have many qualities supporting one another to really be good.

eh it really really depends

i tend to gravitate towards story/character quality games more, but there are plenty of games out there that i play just for the gameplay(battlefront II) or design (minecraft)

Gameplay. If I can't play your game, or I don't LIKE playing your game, all that extra stuff isn't going to matter that much to me. I don't care how good your story is, if I think getting to advance it is a chore, not a game, than it's not worth it.

If I think the story might be good, but the gameplay is bad, I can just watch an LP on Youtube. At least then I can skip to the parts where the story advances and not have to drudge through terrible gameplay.

Edit: Seriously, why isn't "gameplay" one of the options here. Have we really stopped caring about it that much?

I gotta agree with this guy. If a game is not fun, if a game is not entertaining in some small way, then I don't care if you wrote the gaming equivalent of a charles dickens novel, you won't get any points in my book. Some people disagree with me and are heavy story enthusiasts. This is fine. I only take issue when someone goes into the thread of an upcoming fun game like SR3 and proceeds to say shit like "this game is immature and needs to grow up and shit". You know what? Maybe you need to grow up. Maybe if you enjoy story and think that a game will have a crappy one, than just don't buy it. Don't call me immature because I like having fun. I don't know about you, but I don't want all future games to look and play like this: http://www.molleindustria.org/everydaythesamedream/everydaythesamedream.html

Quoted for truth. Video games are interactive by definition, and if the method of interacting is clumsy it defeats the purpose of the medium.

I am with you with saying the story is most important but i would like to say the beginning story of the game is most important. In most games where the story actually should matter it gets smothered into chain quests or side quests or really with no point or direction. Hence if they can established a good introducing story I am usually ok with playing the game through if they give me a great start.

Gameplay. Even if a game has a great story to tell, it can be ruined if the controls are absolute crap.

Story by far. Gameplay comes next then graphics. I can deal with subpar graphics if the story is engaging enough. It's kind of like the film industry in a way; without a good story the game won't be nearly as memorable or feel as satisfying when it concludes. Unless the controls are incredibly distracting, it is the journey that matters instead of the tools that make it possible.

A month ago I would have said the story alone is the most important part of a game. After thinking about it for awhile. I now believe that both the story and the game-play are important to a game. For example: I rented the game Deadly Premonition.

I could not finish it because in my opinion the game-play was terrible. I have been hearing that the game has a great story and I want to rent it again but I don't want to have to deal with the game-play.

The same is for a game with good game-play but a terrible story. If the story cannot keep me interested in the game. I won't bother to continue playing it even if the game-play is good. As I said before I think that both the story and the game-play are the most important thing in a game.

The free stuff that comes in the box.

No, wait, the paid DLC.

Or maybe a well-implemented DRM system.

No, I think I play games primarily for the gameplay. I like a good story, but I'm just as happy playing MegaMan.

Gameplay.

Games aren't only designed to tell you a story or immerse you in a fantastic new world, they're made to be fun. If a game isn't fun to play, I will not enjoy it, no exceptions.
