Everyone knows that the Wii honestly does not count as a console. Whether it be becouse of the fact that it is build nearly completely on motion controls, a lack of good games, or lack of a good online service is entirely up to personal opinion.

When the Wii first came out everyone bought one and set it down a month later and never picked it back up again. I personaly beleive that it is becouse motion controls are not what the average gamer wants. The average gamer wants to sit down, relax, and play a game for hours on end. With motion controls I dont beleive that can happen simply becouse a person gets tired of engaging themselves at that level and the game becomes boring.

I wanna know what kind of future you think motion controls have and if you think Microsoft and Sony are making a good decision with incorperating motion controls.

When motion controls get to a point like the movie gamer then they will be superiour but as that is a long time away standard controls are still so much better.

Motion controls really don't have much chance of a prolonged life, and are certainly not going to go down in history as a core aspect of gaming. The main problem with them is that they just make gaming more difficult. It is much easier to push a button to make a character do something than to act out what it is you want them to do.

That's not to say that motion controls don't have there place, but I think that that place is confined strictly to the casual games market. I can't imagine motion controls fitting into core games very well, I just don't see it happening.

Nintendo have already realised how fickle the casual market can be, and it's only a matter of time before Sony and Microsoft realise it too, and motion controls are no more.

I think it would be better if motion controls were worked on intensively instead of just dicarded, think about it they could offer unparaleled immersion

Motion control? For party games and maybe for fun once in a while, but I wouldn't manage to play for hours with that. Gets annoying pretty fast.
Though I confess I haven't tested the PS one yet because I just don't feel like throwing out so much money for it.

LAWL first to vote for motion controls :3
they, when done correctly, create immense immersion
the wii for example(as i never used the move and i would NEVER buy a 360) has, by far, been the biggest contributor to the field, has games that work well and games that don't for this
games like red steel 2, twilight princess and (though not for the light saber fights) star wars: force unleashed
motion control is a new toy that has bugs to be worked out, but when judged on potential, I can see it has a lot

I agree standard controls are better than motion control by a huge margin, but the Wii not a console? Excuse me? When did you go and survey every single person on the planet? No matter it's control input or processing power it's a machine designed to play video games. That makes it a console. If you say it's not then you're an elitist idiot.

And I'm proof that not everyone just put it away after a month. I don't use it much but I get back to Zelda every so often, and there have been a small number of proper core games on it that are worth playing. Every now and again they release one worthy of my attention and I dust off my Wii again (quite literally) and have a great time. I also use it for old GC games.

You assume too much.

I'd have to disagree with this.

Motion control can only create immersion (assuming the motion control system works great) with games that, if viewed as real life events, can be done by the average person.

And even then it'd be up for debate. I've never felt as immersed playing Wii bowling as I was when only moving my fingers playing any other game.

This pretty much limits the potential of motion control to sports games and cheap arcade-like aiming systems that give people carpal-tunnel (the Wii version of Modern Warfare comes to mind).

Fighting games, shooters, and any game where combat involves something more flamboyant than what a fat guy could do in his living room would have to be watered down.

Motion controls might work for some sort of exercise system (going back to Wii sports), but for all other types of games, it's just a cheap gimmick.

OT: aside from that, who said the Wii wasn't a console? Maybe not a good console but that is beside the point. I've personally seen it as an oblong GameCube that can run Super Smash Brothers: Brawl with a useless side feature for other games I'd never play.

Motion controls do not have the same precision that controllers do. I played Kinect boxing, or whatever it is called, it didn't pickup half my throws. I had to slow down just so the sensor would register me correctly. Annoyed the hell out of me.

Maybe if they improve detection and range of input it will one day be as if not more effective than a standard controller, but that day is far off.

Way to show yourself as partial right off the bat. And learn to freaking write.

Let's not forget that of this generation the Wii is the most commercially successful console.

As to your poll question, I can't vote, why? I like both. Each has their place in gaming, some games can get enriched a great deal by motion controls, why others are best kept with traditional controls.

And heck, sometimes a game with motion controls is just good fun. Not every game needs to be CoD/Mass Effect/NFS or whatever else.

Prefer doesn't really factor into it. It depends on the game, and so far I prefer normal controls.

While I do respect your opinion, I do have to argue with you about one thing; the Wii isn't a console? Yes, it is. Even though it doesn't hold up to your standards it still fits the definition of a console. Yes, a Ford Pinto explodes, but I don't think anyone would NOT call it a car!

OT: I think motion controls need to be differentiated from pointer controls. I LOVE pointer controls. For me that's the only way to play an FPS, TPS, or anything requiring dual analog controls. Now as for motion controls I feel that they have potential but aren't as reliable as a button press.

The only game that I've played that had good motion controls is Red Steel 2. But it had a huge crippling flaw when it comes to immersion. No physical feedback. Swinging in the air and swinging into a concrete wall feels the same. I could make one movement and it would become something else cause I was locked on to an enemy, etc. I really enjoyed the game, yes. But I don't think that motion controls will ever be good for immersion.

Motion controls work great for games like Kinect Adventures, but then the problem is the game it self. It barely held my attention long enough to finish a single event when I tried it out and I did my best to get into it without any negative preconceptions about it.

Just FYI, I've practiced Kendo so I know what it feels like to swing and miss compared to hitting a guy in armor.

Yeah right, nice one reCaptcha

You lost me at "Everyone knows that the Wii honestly does not count as a console". I define a game console as a device whose primary fuction is to play video games. Which the Wii does. I think. Let me check.

*Plays Wii*

Yep, it plays video games. isnt technology amazing?

As for motion controls, I think theres a gap between what can be done, and what is being done with them. Never been particularly interested in Kinect because the whole system feels like a ride at the museum I used to go on as a kid, except their screen was about 300inch. It certainly has potential, Dance Central had proved that, but apart from that game, noones realy doing anything that couldnt be done easier or better with a controller. If its really going to take off as part of the core gamer market, there needs to be an awesome game that can boast some exclusive kinect funtionality. Something that makes you want to buy the console to be able to do that thing. The folks at Joypod had an idea of a FPS game, where you use the controller, but can signal to make your squad do things. Something like this would really add legitimacy to motion controls, as they really add to the experiance.

As for the wii remote, too many developers added its functionality into games that didnt really need it. It gave a lot of creedence to the term "wagglefest" as the survival horror game suddenly decided to make me flail my controller around.

My predictions: Wiimote and Sony move are on the way out, but the Kinect has potential, if we get some good developers with good ideas.

I like the wii controller for playing resident evil 4 because that game just lets you sit down and point the little cursor at whatever you want dead. However I have yet to come across another Wii game that works nearly as well.
Metroid was god awful you had to point at the edge of the screen to turn so if you wanted to turn while strafing you had to stop aiming at what you were shooting at and point at the edge of the damn screen. what moron thought that would work? Seriously shoot at enemy point at edge of screen, shoot at enemy point at edge of screen, shoot at enemy point at edge of screen annnd keep repeating in tll enemy is dead or you get dizzy or bored or frustrated.

Unless I'm standing on the fucking holodeck standard controllers will always, ALWAYS, beat motion controls. The only time I'd consider picking up the Wii controller is if I got to use it to club the stupid bastard that invented it in his head like a baby seal until the white meat showed.

Motion controls were popularized out of Nintendo's desperation when they becme nearly irrelevant after a decade of utter failure and throwing up the Wii as some sort of hail mary on the hopes they could attract a non gaming audience. Unfortunately for the gaming community the casual audience as a whole could be entertained by shaking your keys in their faces and took to the Wii like flies to a particularly rancid pile o' shit.

If there were any justice in the world the Wii would have been laughed off the shelves for being a Gamecube with shitty controls and this current infatuation with replacing actual gaming substance with empty gimmicks like motion controls and 3D would never have began. Blessedly, it seems the Wii's success was nothing more than lightning in a bottle and if the 3DS is any indicator the public's infatuation with gimmicks is diminishing.

I love the Power Glove. It's so bad.
OP: Someone is being a little unreasonable. The Wii is a game console. It is a device whose main function is to play video games, last I checked. But I still have a large dislike for motion controls. Give me mah gamepad.
