A mixture of death, black, and power metal for the most part.

Dissection, Nevermore, and Necrophagist are usually my go-to.

Hard to classify, genre blending stuff like Jesu. There's a few bands or people in every genre that truly define it and the rest are either imitators or just missed the message. Some industrial stuff, like Throbbing Gristle, Coil, NON. Some classic metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest. Some old school rap like NWA, Public Enemy, Biz Markie, Heavy D. Some instrumental stuff like Pelican. Virtually everything Justin Broadrick touches. Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed. Any Pink Floyd except Dark Side of the Moon. Burzum is the only black metal I like and some old school punk too such as Crass, the Germs, and GG Allin.

voted "other" because the music i listen to is really almost any music.
But at the moment it is a mix of dubstep, grime, drum and bass, idm and everything from the UK electronic scene.
For the metal i am into all most anything but most screamo, post-hardcore, deathcore, metalcore and some things from other genres in metal as well for the most of it

I listen to a wide range of music, from Spice Girls/N*Sync/Britney Spears to Kayne West/Kid Cudi/Jay-Z to The Temptations/Earth Wind & Fire/Bobby Caldwell to Underoath/Pierce the Veil/The Devil Wears Prada/etc. I have a bunch of classical composers when I played violin as well.

I just love music.

I'd say alternative rock, but I'm starting to get into electro these days.

And I'm stunned that nobody has ever done a topic so obvious on this site until now before.
I did it awhile ago :(

I cast my vote for Electronic! Oh wait..

I guess mine are more sub-genres, because rock has a lot of crap I don't like that other people do like AC/DC for instance:

Jazz, but I don't listen to much old stuff. I like Quantic quite a lot though, I get lost in which sub-genre is which with jazz so I'll just leave it broad.
Alternative
Ambient
Easy Listening
Electro/Electronic
Funk/Soul
Stoner Rock, but this mosty centres around QotSA and side projects.
Indie
Instrumental, and lots of it.
Lounge
Post Rock, also lots of it.
Progressive and Psychedelic Rock
Trip Hop, which is probably my most extensive collection, it's just so good.

And that is me.

The ever-growing number of sub-genres and the ever-growing 'bullshittiness' of their monikers and half-baked descriptions never ceases to baffle me.

Suicidal depressive black?
Viking?
Brutal death?
National fucking socialist?

Preposterous... and utterly so.
Alright, let's go through all the subgenres you complained about. Each one has its own distinctive musical structure and rules, and in such a large master genre (Metal), they are needed to differentiate exactly what kind of sound a listener is looking for.

Also, don't ***** about something you know nothing about. If you wanted to know more about them, you could have asked me.

Go out and buy each one of these records (as I have), and tell me they don't sound unique:

Impavida - Into Empty Spheres

I mostly like Metal and Rock. But really anything but country.
Even Country has its moments.

EDIT: Man, it's hard finding a good version of this on YouTube.
Well you have your thing and I have mine, and this is not it.
How about

Impavida's not bad, but a simple "black metal" classification would suffice. "Suicidal depressive black" sounds utterly stupid.

Disturbed has its moments, too. I particularily like Meaning of Life.
But I'm very open about music, so while I prefer Hard Rock, I'll even listen to a few country, new metal or even trance titles.

That's why they're normally called either Suicidal Black, or Depressive Black. Not both.

And if you think that a general Black Metal tag could go on just any band, that just shows me how little you know about metal.

I went with "Other" because there's so much out there that its kind of hard to just limit my liking to one genre. As of right now, I've been kinda stuck on Bad Religion, Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, Rammstein, NOFX, and everything that both Mike Patton and Mike Ness have been part of. Win 12 Internets if you can name three of the many bands that Mike Patton's been in, bonus of 5 Internets if you don't use Wikipedia.
