So Escapists, do you play an instrument? Which one do you play? Why?

As for me, up until a few months ago I had been playing piano for 9 years. I got sick of the plinkety-plink sound of my shitty little upright and my dwindling ability to but my heart and soul into a piece, and realized that my musical interests had shifted from classical music to grunge and funk, so I started taking bass lessons.

So...yeah. How about you guys?

I play a bass, on and off for now.

I started playing because my best friend and I have the mutual interest of, in the future, forming and playing in a death metal band together. That's all there is to it really.

I've been a drummer for about eight years. Been playing along with Dream Theater for at least seven of them. Animals As Leaders is my new challenge (WAAAAY harder). I also play a bit of guitar but I SUCK at it.

I'm more of a composer though since apartment living doesn't allow for me to set up my drums and let loose. I'll have a link to my Sound Cloud in my profile info if anybody is interested.

I play Uke (badly) and three stringed dulcitars. That's an Appalachian Dulcimer setup like a guitar, think Strumstick. I have clumsy short fingers, no rhythm and a tin ear, and even I can play a dulcitar.

I used to do some guitar, then later on some singing/ musical theatre, but exams and extreme laziness mean I no longer do any of this. For some reason musical theatre grades never seemed that acceptable for a straight male young adult...

The skin flute, HAHAHA I'M SO CLEVER AND FUNNY.

Anyways, I used to play the piano when I was a kid. I absolutely loved it, don't know why I stopped. Now I can't play for shit.

I play guitar, both electric and acoustic. Here is a video of me doing so!!!!!!!!

Nothing terribly complex, just some simple arpeggiated chords.

Viola, drums, and some (very) basic violin.
I started playing the violin in fifth grade, but switched to the viola in sixth after hearing the theme to John Adams, which has some sweet viola music (yeah, that's kind of a lame reason, but I wouldn't be where I am today without it) and I've been playing it ever since in orchestra at school. I've been taking drum lessons for about a year now, and I've gotten fairly good at it. I play the electric violin in a church band, and I don't do anything but provide some backing for everyone else, but I've decided to get reacquainted with treble clef and start doing more advanced stuff.

That is a pretty limiting poll.

Anyway, as my profile image will tell you, I play tuba/sausaphone. Very fun instrument to play, and people who play tuba are generally the life of a band.

I've been playing cello for about 8 years now. I decided to play it when a group of music teachers came to my school in fourth grade promoting orchestra, and I thought that cello would be really fun. This was kind of weird, because before than, I had absolutely no musical inclinations. But I've been playing since then because I still really enjoy it (although I should practice more).

I play guitar (ten years), piano (six years), and mandolin (one year). I enjoy guitar the most. I'm actually better at mandolin than piano. I don't know why, but I just cannot seem to get good at the piano.

I played the piano and the drums for most of my childhood and early teens. I quit and haven't touched an instrument in like 10 years. I don't know why but music has never really resonated with me on any level. I've never really listened to music ever for enjoyment, it was more of everyone in my gradeschool was playing an instrument so I did it too just to fit in.

Played the trumpet for the last decade, good times, only grade 4 since I'm not that musical but I still play in a concert band so that's good enough for me.

Some guitar, acoustic. Basically whatever I taught myself or learned in school classes. Basics of the basics really.

I've been playing guitar for only about 5 years now. Cool stuff. Love music. Self taught; learned the keys, learned the chords, working on writing my own stuff... and... yeah, not much else to discuss about that.

Piano, for about 12 years now (the majority of my life). I don't really play classical at all, though, mostly pop or rock. ^_^
If it counts, I also sang for about 4 years, but haven't done much singing (except for a few open mic nights) over the past couple years...
This coming year I'll also be taking up violin, and already have (what seems like) a relatively easy violin song that I'd like to learn ASAP.

Violin for 18 years. I'm in an orchestra comprised of medical faculty and medical students.
