Ninjas probably. The Samurai were a bit too corrupt for my taste. Also, espionage is always badass.

In a fight? Tough to say. Ninjas have the element of surprise on their side, and reflexes that make a Navy SEAL jealous, but the Samurai are well armored, master sword fighters. A ninja's worst nightmare.

However I think a ninja could win only because if its first strike failed it would retreat immediately and try again. Plus they're cooler.

Ninja for me. Though for anyone familiar with the Fate/Stay Night VN, Fake Assassin is way cooler than True Assassin. (The first is a samurai, the second is ninja like.)

Ninjas use every tool at their disposal.

Poisons, traps, anything to get the job done.

They were also advocates of social stealth.

Ninjas never dressed like this.

They dressed like this.

Like any other peasant.

If you knew a ninja had killed you, then the ninja wasn't doing their job right.

Heh, there was actually a lego series based entirely on this premise.

I prefered the ninjas, because their little lego balaclava things were majorly badass:

And since it is scientifically proven that what happens in Lego models is instantly factually transferable into real life, I concur that ninjas are better.

Samurai seeing how they wear armours and ninja weapons would not be effective like throwing stars which will lead to the battle of blades. In that battle of blades I believe (in my view) samurai would win due to their training.

Also-
Even when using the element of suprise (especially when they're off guard) and the night, they still got the upper hand (but in saying so they had the home advantage and it was a handful of ninjas vs a village full of samurai).

Shinobi is pretty much ninja anyway.

I choose whatever Darth Maul is. That's a ninja, right?
Darth Mual in our planet would be a samurai. While I'm saying this, my most favorite samurai would have to be Afro Samurai.

A ninja's worst nightmare? Nah, don't think so, a ninja's worst nightmare is a better ninja with a different employer.

See, those shinobi sucked, 'cos if they'd known what they were doing, they'd've waited for the party to end, let everyone go to sleep, then let themselve risk being seen to make their kills.

Still, not going to argue, awesome fight scene, very frenetic.

What about Lieutenant Worf, what would he be?

He would be a mix of both but he would probably be more of a samurai.

Are we talking about the romaniticized versions here?

If so, I don't know if I can choose. I adore the whole "training to perfection with your sword" business, but the ninja's superpowers are pretty awesome.

Or are we talking realistic business?
Because even though samurai weren't as awesome as the modern idea, they were a damn lot closer than ninja ever were to theirs.

Four words. Jack, Afro, Musashi, Susanoo.

Samurai FTW.
What about Champloo?

OT: Ninja. If you're in a fair fight, you're doing it wrong.

Actually, since samurai were in a sense their arch enemies, ninjas often trained to be able to take them down.

Also, the two groups had very different fighting styles. Samurai usually stuck with what they saw as honorable one on one, face to face fights, whereas ninja favored trickery, sneak attacks, and hit and run tactics, which is why the samurai had such disdain for them.

But anyway, I say ninja.

Historically-speaking, I prefer the ninja.

Pop-culturally-speaking, that's a difficult choice. It all comes down to who actually has it best on the Rule of Cool department? The two best choices to compare would have to be Samurai Jack and Dr. McNinja. If you can think of a better choice overall, then I welcome the discussion Otherwise, let the brain do its thing.

The thing here is that they're both scarily-good characters. Jack was trained around the world and given a sword forged by the gods in order to deal with a shapeshifting evil with a badass voice. The Doc, on the other hand, was raised by his parents...who are elite ninjas of crazy-good skill. Doc is actually so good at his ninja skills that he wants to be Batman, to the point where he ended up studying EVERYTHING at college and was into crimefighting before he became a doctor.

As per their plots, Jack's been thrust into the future and combatted an amazing amount of hordes which require either quick action, quick thinking, or both to defeat. This was all achieved despite his being an ancient samurai, which is impressive to no end. Dr. McNinja has, thus far, had to take care of...patients, pirates, raptor banditos, robots, your basic supervillains, ninjas, zombies (who might also be ninjas), time travel, dinosaurs, ghosts, giants, vampires, mafia boys, a unicorn, and King Radical.

Jack may Jump Good, but the doc's world is funnier. Still ninja.

I'm gonna have to go with ninjas for one fact; They were/are pragmatic.

Need an actor killed? Dress as a stage hand that people are MEANT to ignore and slit his throats while the audience thinks it's part of the show.
Warlord being a nuisance? Pretend to be a barber and give him a close shave
Local samurai getting lippy and asking for a duel? Kill him in his sleep, honour in life or death situations is a stupid premise, plain and simple.
Actually get into a fight with one? Despite the fact that he was stupid enough to get caught/face the bastard, The ninja was the one trained to be the anti-thesis of samurai with the explicit purpose and ability to take one down.
Oh, his mates got your house surrounded? Your house is filled with secret tunnels for an easy escape, and if they give chase, run across platforms hidden in a lake to deceive your opponents that you can walk through water and cultivate an air of mysticism.
Caught without your sword? You are a farmer which not only gives you a cover job and a decent income but has given you experience in different improvised weapons.

Sure it isn't spectacular(says you, any job that gets done cleverly with no risks to yourself is more impressive to me than risking your life to make it a spectacle), but living to kill another day beats that any of that. Honour is overrated when you aren't alive to enjoy it, or you have to kill yourself when you don't have it

Plus, the samurai routinely exercised a right which allowed them to cut down passerby's on the street to test the sharpness of their sword and worked to ban weapons for the common man so they'd be unchallenged, which only lead to the creation of improvised weapons the ninjas are known for. What jackasses.

Though samurai jack and Musashi get a pass for being badass and pure lawful good, and badass and pragmatic respectively
