Just wanted to share this with you folks,
In a nostalgia phase that I'm currently experiencing, I went searching online for media of my favorite RTS to see back in the day footage, just to remember without installing anything and get my head bashed in by trying to make it work when I found this little wee project.
It's called Return to the Roots (www.rttr.info) and its a unofficial (add-on) for settlers II one of my all time favorite games. They made it so that Mac, Windows and Linux users can play the game without any emulation and just needing a few files from the original game.
It also adds a much needed screen resolution options (instead of the original 640x480) and multiplayer with online game channel with easy access. Not only this but they were working on a new race, the babylonians which seemed pretty interesting.
Anyway, I tried it online (there are only 2 options at the moment, either online or single player skirmish) and I got afraid that it would take forever to finish a game and got my ass wooped in less then 30 mins, damn.
Unfortunately due to the lack of people, the developers are start to giving up since most of the team thinks they have worked for nothing, which is a shame since this addon is currently in development for about 5 years or so (everything was made from scratch).
If you guys like settlers 2 jump in the website I indicated below and drop a few lines of support, or join the irc channel, also located in the website and show some support. The website is half english, half german as they are trying a last attempt into getting more people to play the game and give feedback, so you won't have any problem posting in english (it might give them the boost they need!)
