Yes, I know some people will hate me for this.

I'm indecisive. When I decide to buy something, its a long arduous process that involves an immense amount of reflection and second guessing. I set on a task that requires me to learn everything I can about a product in order to make the most informed decision possible. It sucks. Completely takes the joy out of the purchase.

But anyways.

Im buying Link to the Past, or Super Metroid. I've played both games. Have I beaten them? Sadly, no, I havent. My parents thought I would want a Genesis, and while I'm not complaining, my experience with SNES games is limited to friends and family, plus ROMS(although after the advent of the Wii my conscience blocked me from the latter) and so I'm not as well versed with either game as well as I'd like to be. I know both are good. I want to, and will inevitably own each of them. But in the meantime, while the disposal part of my income exists, which should I take the plunge into?

And in an effort to make a bit of a topic out of this, so that I don't appear like some pandering doofus, are there any classic games that you just havent got around to beating yet? If I had a dollar for everytime I boasted it was time for me to sit down and beat Ninja Gaiden I'd probably have 50 bucks.

Super Metroid was the best in the series for me, where Link to the Past is at best 3rd place, so I'm going with Metroid.

I've always been more partial to Classic Metroid.
Why?

EDIT : Being serious, not a dick. Ambiguous, one word answers piss me off too.
I can't really say. I'm more of a sci-fi than fantasy geek overall. Metroid's setting and gameplay have always interested me more than Legend of Zelda's.

Plus, Super Metroid is one of the best in the series.

Super Metroid because, to be honest, the original Zelda games never did anything for me, whereas the Metroid series has always been badass.

Link to the Past. Even from a top down perspective, and even after all these years, the scale and detail of the world, and the quality of the adventuring always amazes me. The world feels big from an age where such a thing was virtually unheard of.

I still play it, and I find it a compliment to it and not an inditement of the more recent games that I find it almost as fun as, if not just as fun as the more recent additions to the Zelda family.

That is a tough question for a diehard Nintendo fan like myself.

While both games have qualities that are great and both certainly have earned their "classic" status, I think it comes down to two things: length and gameplay.

Zelda: A Link to the Past was a much longer game, especially if you do all the sidequests and get every item. However, once you're finished, there's little replayability, aside from just wnating to enjoy the game again. Super Metroid, on the other hand, has the secret ending to aim for, perfecting speed runs and quite a few places to sequence break if you're good at it.

The other aspect is the gameplay, specifically the adventure aspect. Zelda is neat because it has that entire overworld with great music. It feels epic. Metroid, on the other hand, involves a lot of dungeon delving and the ambience is very mood setting. Most items are very cleverly hidden and require you to really think about how to get them. Unfortunately, there's a lot of random bomb placing, even to advance the main plot.

Both are good games, but those are the main two differences I found when playing each. As for my recommendation? Despite being a Zelda fanboy, I would go with Super Metroid for your first. It feels much more exciting to me and a better overall game. Just mind the frustrating bits where you have to bomb every inch of every area and it turns out to be a better experience... but only by a little. ;)

Absolutely Super Metroid. They're both excellent games, but as good as ALttP is, there's really only one set way to play it. Super Metroid, on the other hand, offers bold new ways to play, for players adventurous enough and resourceful enough to find them.
