One thing on xbox live is online achivements, i downloaded army of two on games on demand, and i was hoping to at least complete one of my games fully, but No. They have stupid achievements like "Kill 500 Different People" or "Complete 20 different objectives" now this wouldn't be a problem if the online wasn't FUCKING DEAD! No one plays this game online, so wait do i have to guy 3 other people with a copy of army of two to go online with me 500 times?? stupid i tells ya.

Anyway aside from my little rant what do you think of online achievements and trophies?

I loathe them with a passion. Just look at Killzone 2, it's a brilliant example of why they're horrible. The sooner developers learn to fuck them off, the better.

They're really really annoying if not done properly.

No one likes grind achievements or really difficult ones that requiring boosting or immense skill/luck.

Some multiplayer achievements are fine though; they are not inherently bad.

I normally dont play online, but I have looked at a few of them such as on condemned 2 and burnout paradise, and they seem to be about fucking impossible. Online achievements would be fine, if they were more about skill than grinding and luck. But I really dont see that happening, so I think they should drop the online acheivements until they figure out what theyre doing wrong and fix it.

They're OK as long as the game is guaranteed to have an online community long after launch. In practice, this means it has to be the sequel to a series known for it's online play - the Halo and COD series spring to mind here (and I was confused by the lack of MP achievements in MW2. Not that I want them, but I'd have thought they'd have been shoved in there somewhere).
There are several games that have MP achievements and no community any more though, so no-one's going to get them, which is odd, given that the point of them is to get people to try the multiplayer.

I just picked up Transformers:WFC, and highly doubt that any of the MP achievements will be possible by the time I've finished the campaign.

Can't stand 'em myself. Not because I worry about getting achievements for 'game completion' purposes (I really couldn't care less about that) but more because it's yet another indication that as far as game developers are concerned if you're not online then you don't deserve a complete gaming experience - you have to pay for a complete game, but you can't play all of it.

I think if the game is more designed for MP than SP, like Left 4 Dead, then it's perfectly acceptable. If your MP component is just a throw-in on what is supposed to be a single player experience (fuck you Fable 2 and your doll collecting achievement) then no online achievements.

Some have been poorly done, but the same can be said for single player achievements. I do like some of them, like gears had one for getting 100 kills with each type of weapon. That wasn't too difficult and it forced you to change things up. Crackdown 2 has orbs you can only collect with another player. These are good examples. I also like the viral ones, like kill someone who had this achievement.

Ultimately, achievements are as much for developers as they are for players, as it lets devs know how people play the game. When the Gears 2 Devs see that only a small percentage of their players actually got Seriously 2.0, that could influence them into thinking about changing up the game play.

They only annoy completionists who can't be satisfied until the developer's on-disk systems tells them they've 100% completed the game. If you were looking objectively at all the achievements, writing off as bad design any objective that was clearly in there in order to keep you grinding on their game long after the warrant for that has worn out, you'd be quite a lot happier.

As for those cases where there are reasonable achievements in a *dead* multiplayer... Try to encourage some of your friends to buy the game if you think it's worth the money. Multiplayer for games like Army of Two is currently dead because the overwhelming majority think it's shit. If a game is worth playing, multiplayer is usually alive.

I'm really not a fan of multiplayer trophies that consist of any requirements other than "win games" and/or "kill people" since those will actually encourage players to go for the objectives rather than spend half the match trying to catch butterflies or whatever.

This is also an example of a bad multiplayer achievement since it depends heavily on an active online community. If the community isn't active, the achievement is a chore or even impossible.

I don't go out of my way to do them but if I've beat the game I may try to get a bit more life out of it by doing some trophies. But I can't sand stupid ones like "kill this many people"

An example would be just cause 2. I beat the game then got another 10ish hours out of just getting some trophies.

Killzone 2's Trophies were an attempt to keep players in the online play... I didn't like KZ2's online multiplayer, so the prospect of grinding away at it for the sake of a few trophies didn't really appeal. In fact, it put me right off.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is an example of (in my opinion) good online Trophies/Achievements. They are inventive and encourage players to use all the Kit items (Rocket Launchers, Repair Tools, Motion Sensors etc) at their disposal, while not being too difficult.

Some are just plain funny:
(Roadkill with a helicopter, Headshot with the Repair Tool, get a kill with Knife, M60 and RPG in the same round)

Yeah, I was a little disappointed by Saints Row 2.... they have a bunch of achievements for doing the entire game single player, then a bunch more for doing the entire game multiplayer, but if you did the multi player you got the single player achievements as well. If I had known that I would have tried to do the entire game multi player, but by the time I got it hardly anyone was on anymore.

I really have no concern for getting 100% achievments in most games, But I always hat the MP achievemnts that require you to play for so long or kill somany many players or things alone those lines.

and some are just plain evil (Et Tu Brute) i CANNOT DO THAT ONE!!! (foaming at the mouth with rage)

however the Spectat and Onslaught add on trophies were excellent and well thought out.
