I hate most online achievements. I'm still pissed that the only trophy I can't get for Resistance 2 is the bloody 10000 kill one. If most games just did the Uncharted 2 thing where you only need to play online in each mode once or something, that would be fine.

I loathe them with a passion. Just look at Killzone 2, it's a brilliant example of why they're horrible. The sooner developers learn to fuck them off, the better.
Killzone 2's Trophies were an attempt to keep players in the online play... I didn't like KZ2's online multiplayer, so the prospect of grinding away at it for the sake of a few trophies didn't really appeal. In fact, it put me right off.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is an example of (in my opinion) good online Trophies/Achievements. They are inventive and encourage players to use all the Kit items (Rocket Launchers, Repair Tools, Motion Sensors etc) at their disposal, while not being too difficult.

Some are just plain funny:
(Roadkill with a helicopter, Headshot with the Repair Tool, get a kill with Knife, M60 and RPG in the same round)
and some are just plain evil (Et Tu Brute) i CANNOT DO THAT ONE!!! (foaming at the mouth with rage)

however the Spectat and Onslaught add on trophies were excellent and well thought out.
Everyone hates Et Tu Brute...

I disliked SPECACT because it let players buy weapons they should unlock themselves.

Is Onslaught good? I haven't got any money to buy it but I plan to soon...

Offline achievements, I think, are a good idea as it gives you something to aim for and new challenges.
Online, however, I dislike.
Some of them are ok, like I remember one for GTA4 which was "Kill a Rockstar" (whatever that means), but ones that are like "Kill X amount of players" annoy me, especially on games where, as mentioned, the online is dead. Then again, I don't judge a gamer on his gamerscore. Nor do I care if I myself cannot get an achievement due to dead online mode.

Unless they affect in-game stuff, like granting xp or unlockign stuff, i don't give a fuck about them.

I hate how they auto added achievements to Fallout 3 that have to do with the expansions, even though i don't fucking have it. How about you make like Oblivion and download the achievements with the damn expansions!

IMO go back to the old skewl fps trophies like Quake's very load and shameful "Humiliation" or UT's "Combo Whore" and who could forget the ever glorifying "HOLYSHIT!!!!"

I agree... lately most things are grind... but still those who want it will have it... if its what it takes to be the best then I am sure someone right now is jerking off somewhere to achieve the wanker rank in some or other MMO...

I love ones like halo, L4D2 and the orange box, they have half easy ones and the rest and very difficult. I like the difficult challenges, but I don't want to get them all.

I hate them but am hopelessly addicted to them. I carried that stupid gnome all the way through Half-Life 2: Episode Two just for the stupid achievement, I have all 500 or so TF2 achievements and I am trying to get all the SC2 ones.

This thread gives me Deja Vu...

OT: Don't care for them, I think its pretty sad when people try to collect trophies which give you nothing other than a gamer score.

I love single player trophies, especially in open world games. I hate most online trophies as a lot of them require massive amounts of grinding ( see "Killing Machine " in Resistance 2). I like ones that encourage you to try new strategies and modes.

Multiplayer achievements are garbage. The only achievement I don't have for BC2 is one of the multiplayer ones. Timeshift had atrocious multiplayer and nearly half the gamerscore is locked up in that crap. Same with Fracture. The latest Bond offering had awful online play too.

I'm not a rabid completionist, but I definitely have a bit of an OCD streak.

Edit: Left 4 Dead and it's ilk are exceptions naturally, because they aren't meant to be played single player.

Challenging ones are cool, and I usually try to get them after I've completed the game once. It gives the game replayability. Grinding ones can take a flying leap, though.

They are all right as long as there is still an online community of some kind. If the online is dead, oh well. Don't get them then. It's so odd to me that achievements have gotten to the point that when there's noone online on an old game the first thought anyone will have is "Fuck! how am I supposed to achievement-whore now?" instead of "Fuck! I wanted to have fun online."

I mean, I'll do all kinds of stupid crap to get achievements, but I don't get this mentality of getting achievements for the sake of getting them. The achievements are secondary to the fun.

Think I used the word "achievements" in this post enough?

I am not a trophy whore, so I don't bother. I get what I get and that is all that matters.

If I did care, I think they should do it like Uncharted 2. Online trophies are in-game only, so you could platinum it in single-player. You can also use the points you get from getting the trophies to buy in-game items. Online and offline and points from both work on both. So if you need a new single-player toy but can't get the next achievement, you can pop online for a wee bit and get a few of teh easy ones so you can buy the new thing for singleplayer.

I generally dislike them. They're fine in a game like Left 4 Dead 2, but otherwise, it should count offline botmatches for multiplayer.
