I searched for this prior to posting and didn't find a topic like it in the past couple of months.

So what do you guys think of online achievements? Are they a bonus to a game's online multiplayer since people have something to work towards, or are they detrimental to the online multiplayer as you'll get the people who just do the same thing over and over whether it's helping or hindering the team (I'm sure you've all encountered someone like that as some point)

Personally I dislike them for the people who will just boost a certain stat (kills with a particular weapon/heals etc.) and completely forget that they're in a TEAM GAME where the objective is to work together to beat your opponents and most of all, have fun.

Grinding for achievements in single player is fine with me purely because you don't affect other people's experiences with the game.

What are your thoughts?

For some games, the balance is just right, but for others, it seems that the Devs put in a large amount of online achievments to boost online traffic.

I love them. Especially the hard-to-get ones.

I recently got Fertilizer Man and Sole Survivor on Nazi Zombies :3

I like 'em as it feels you are playing and getting a reward out of it. But! I do agree. When playing a squad game it's annoying when someone takes off in the other direction just to do what he wants

I'd like to see a game with all of its achievements tied to the online play. Just make them a little more inventive, developers. Make them all secret and then award us for those little moments that we record and upload to Xfire or discuss with our friends because they were so awesome.

5 GS - Score a kill during a rocket jump.
Obviously, people will eventually find out what they all are and then you'll get the usual losers showing up to boost their gamerscore while they wait for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender game to come out. But for a little while, people would be having loads of fun.

"Man, I just got 10 GS by spamming grenades!"
"Did you kill a bunch of guys with one grenade or something?"
"I have no fucking clue!"

Achievements are achievements why are you like arguing about it?
I don't see anybody arguing. I merely asked what people's opinions of Multiplayer achievements were and opinions don't equate to arguing.

I don't like them because even though I do, people who don't have xbox live can't get them. I mean they don't bother me because I have most of them on almost all my games but some people hate them.

I don't like many especially on games that no one plays multiplayer on. I mean, who's going to get a hundred bow kills on Prey's online?

This is exactly why Live Arcade games should NEVER have online achievements.

I rarely, if ever, play console games online, so to me they're just something that looks cool but I will never have... I'm not really bothered one way or another.

I hate them because it causes people to not cooperate with the team just because they only have to no scope 56 more people with the sniper rifle.

They're alright if a game has good multiplayer. But I absolutely hate them on games with shitty tacked on multiplayer. I mean, who the hell is actually going to take the time to get the online achievements for Quake 4?
