So I've had people note that they don't see me wearing shorts anytime I go out; that they've only seen me wearing jeans/work pants, even in the summer.

Its' not that I don't wear shorts - I just do it around the house is all. But normal pants are what I prefer to wear when I go outside anywhere.

What about you Escapists? Do you generally prefer pants? Shorts? Or are you the rare beast who bucks the trends and refuses to wear pants at all? (For ease of classification, we'll say that dresses qualify as pants and that skirts/sufficiently short general women's wear constitutes shorts)

Since this is a Paragon Fury thread, I have certain quotas that must be met.

Pants, but if you have to spend any significant amount of time outdoors in Texas in the summer, pants simply aren't an option unless you want to show up sweat soaked everywhere, so for the middle 5-6 months of the year it's wearing shorts and feeling exposed time.

Unless you're doing some sort of manual labor, in which case you need to suck it up and wear the pants for safety, but... I got the impression that you were mostly talking about social situations anyway. Most places with a dress code require pants of some sort after all.

Pants but only because the British weather sucks!

The last time I worn shorts was a couple of years ago when it actually was scouching hot in the summer! Heh I wanted to buy a purple short so I could like The Hulk but my bro kept saying it was clashing with my usual clothing due to being a social butterfly he is.

Same with Arizona.

I never knew people had a problem with cargo shorts because it is the most common thing outside of jeans here in Arizona. And for desert weather its perfect unless you need the protection of jeans, heavy material that can support a belt with good pockets.

Pants because I hate my legs and don't want to spread the plague that is...my legs...upon the world at large. I feel comfortable in pants: lounge pants at home and jeans while I'm out. I don't mind ripped jeans since my knees are mostly innocent but I just can't wear shorts.

I hate shorts, I haven't worn them since 1996, mostly because I'm thin as a stick and also really clumsy so Jeans and long sleeve shirts provided more protection against my body hitting the pavement and also helped me hide that my arms and legs look like noodles, you pretty much will never see me with shorts or a long sleeve shirt/t-shirt, even in the summer in the middle of the desert with a temperature of over 50?C.

Also for some reason dogs love attacking me so again slightly more protective.

Proper air flow, especially in the extremities, is very important for thermoregulation. This is why, come January, you'll have joggers running around Chicago wearing gloves, hats, snow boots, coats you could survive an Arctic blizzard in- and athletic shorts, in sub-zero weather. And for those of you who've yet to throw off the yoke of French imperialism, that's zero Fahrenheit. As someone who weighs more than a lowland gorilla, I can tell you that fat works just as well as an insulator on land as it does in the water, and the muscles activity required to move a body as large as mine (with the same grace and speed as a normal-sized person, no less) generates quite a bit of heat very rapidly.

So unless it's a matter of safety or cleanliness, or a piece of formality that I can't get out of, or it's actually too cold for the time I expect to be outside, it's shorts and short sleeves for me.

Wide, knee length skirts/dresses all the way. Long enough to prevent accidents of the flashy (and fleshy) kind, short enough to not get in the way. Plus, I like how they go all 'whoosh!' when you move. Nice and dramatic. A little above the knee is fine, too, but anything shorter is a hassle. Unless it's summer I do wear a panty hose of some kind, though. Maintaining perfectly smooth legs is time-consuming. Plus, I get cold easily.

As for clothes with leg-parts: shorts aren't as comfy as skirts, but are more suitable for more sporty activities, so I do wear them on rare occassions. Oh, and I have two pairs of regular jeans.

Shorts.

I am still wearing them up here in Canada, but it is pretty warm still at around 10 degrees celcius. Probably won't stop until it gets consistently around zero all day.

I like the mobility. At work last year, I ripped a hole in my pants crotch from squatting within 2-3 months of starting.

Plus, I overheat really easily, so I like to have my legs open to the air at least. It is brutal in the winter, because I wear sweat pants everyday. So indoors I need to hike the pants up, because my legs will be boiling.

Pants always. I haven't wore shorts in years. I'm not sure why but I've never felt comfortable in them. I choose to believe Level 7 Dragon's post is the reason why.

As a veteran of the windswept tundra of Saskatchewan, pants are my default legs. It typically has to be over 20 degrees out for me to drop trou and grab shorts.

Wow, you have an amazing tolerance for low temperatures.

I prefer shorts. Pants feel weird when it's not temperature appropriate. I've always dressed very casually with loose-fitting clothes. Never cared for fashion.

That said, if I lived in a colder climate like I want to, I'd be more open to wearing pants. But I don't, and probably won't for a few years yet.

...ah, shorts or trousers, gotcha.

The latter. Always. Though I do live in semi-permanently overcast Blighty, so that's not much of a sartorial stipulation.

Australia. Jeans. Always.

Don't like shorts. They're uncomfortable, and I just have something against them outside that that I can't put my finger on. Most pants I'm also fairly meh about, but Jeans work great for me. That said, this is also coming from the guy who won't take off his jacket fully even in 40 degree heat, its too practical. So. What do I know.
