Hello fellow Escapees.
Recently, I have seen what is going on with Arkham City, and I have decided not to buy it.

I was a huge fan of the original game, it was great and I felt real joy when City was announced, but now I see that they are doing just about everything to the game that I hate.

They demand pre-ordering from diffrent places for the diffrent skins. I.E you would have to pre-order it from 6 diffrent places to get all the costumes

And as if that wasn't bad enough for me, they also said that if you bought it used, you would have to pay to unlock Catwoman as a playable character.

I don't know about you guys, but this business model speaks only "CASH NOW, DO EVERYTHING TO GET IT" to me, and I despise it. I will be buying it used, just because it's my own personal "FUCK YOU!" to the business model.

Thoughts?

They've been doing this for so long with all the major games coming out. It's hard when you really do want to play the game.

They don't get your money, why should you get all the content? Hell, it's not even main content, it's stuff on the side.

Sounds like a fair trade to me, but I would say that, because I buy all my games new.

And pre-order skins? Meh, I don't really care about how my character looks while doing the freakin' challenge modes.

Yep. Because skins and a side character are going to be the main 90% of the game.

They are fucking aesthetics. They don't matter.

Tell me, OP. Did you complain when Soul Calibur II (I believe it was II) had three different exclusive characters depending on which console you bought it for?

You need a "I won't be buying it anyway" choice.

They pushed back the PC release until November but that month, and the following few months, are all booked up with Skyrim by witch time i'll have forgotten all about Batman.

Why do the pre-order bonuses even matter? They'll all be available as DLC before the year's out anyway...

Side note: Most of the Gamestops in my area are actually offering all of the pre-order bonuses, including Nightwing and Robin for an extra $7 or so.

Strange story, I bought a DVD the other day, used. No extra or bonus content was locked until I threw money at the film studio... It was just, you know, available since I payed for it. It wasn't part of the film but still it was there no locked.

OT. Not buying, as I've never bought a game with an online pass new, if I want the game I buy used so they get no money off me for their dickery.

Eh, when it comes down to it, all I'd potentially lose is a couple of skins (utterly pointless) and in theory, should I buy it preowned (I'm not) Catwoman. Nothing actually directly needed to play the game. No core game mechanics missing. It's essentially all what would be released as DLC anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

Maybe the business model itself is flawed, but in the same measure it's not really gonna damage your enjoyment of the game unless you feel you NEED Catwoman and ALL the skins, y'know?

I wouldn't even use the skins, so I'm not that bothered. As for the Catwoman thing, Gamestop is handing out the codes for it if you buy used (unless they stopped).

So yeah.

I wish I lived where you live. (I think Nightwing is yet-to-be-dated DLC and not a preorder bonus though)

I couldn't care less!

If it was gameplay that was affected (like missing out on levels because I didn't buy it from Play/Gamestop/EB/Game etc, etc) then yes it would be annoying, but because you can't play as a slightly different looking Batman...

I couldn't care less!

Hey they gotta make money somehow...
By which I mean "Isn't it enough selling the game itself?"
If they have the opportunity to make more money, they will. They're a business. That's what businesses do.

And all they're removing is skins. Frankly, this isn't nearly as bad as a lot of other games.

And you'd get Catwoman if you just paid for the damn game.

No, they're doing it right. They're trying to combat second hand games with additional rewards. It isn't going to hamper your enjoyment of the game because you can't play as catwoman or TAS batman. They aren't removing major content like multiplayer or missions. They're giving an aesthetic bonus to the people that buy the game firsthand.

This is the kind of marketing strategy I'm fine with.
Interestingly, apparently cutscenes involving Catwoman are altered if you don't have her 'unlocked'. I imagine it changes it to her simply beating up all the thugs in the cutscene instead of having you do it yourself, but I find that interesting for a few reasons.

1. It's still a complete game without Catwoman since the story is changed to accommodate that.

2. If one of the Catwoman sections is really hard or frustrating, then you dodged a bullet by not having her in the first place.
