Why do you do it or not do it?

I nickname all my Pokemon because it creates a closer bond between me and them. It is also fun.

Dodrio? Hmm, what should I call it. I know! NINJAPANTS![footnote]Yes, there is an inside joke there none of you know about.[/footnote]

Anyway, it is your turn. Do you nickname your Pokemon pals or are you comfortable (or even prefer) the default names?

If I catched a Ghastly or something I call it BOO! or a second Ditto will be Datto, Dotto, Dattum, whatever.

Nicknames were advised by my friends for multiplay. It adds to the mindgames of which Pokémon comes next when there's a switch. It only works on the first round, but it's still an advantage.

Like a big Fighter called Fattybum and a Ludicolo called Bumwiggle. (Got those from a friend, I guess he was in a 'bum phase'.)

I like nicknaming my Pokemon. I do it whenever I have a good name for them.

Speaking of which, I should start thinking of nicknames for Generation 5 Pokemon...

I love nicknaming pokemon because it makes feel a bit closer to those little(or Huge)guys.

I usually name them after another video game character or their name is a pun or play on words.

I don't. The quickest way for me to learn new Pokemon names is not to rename them at all. That habit has translated into my replays, too, because honestly, I don't see the point.

Also, I hate my nicknames that I give to my Pokemon. They're always so lame.

I would usually nickname only the ones I use when going through the main story, up to becoming the champion as such. afterwards I would only nickname them if when I caught them a good name pops up into my head. My heartgold team I used was like this

Feraligator: Hero
Gengar: Lancer
Butterfree: Smart guy
Magmar: Big guy
Lanturn: Chick

I don't. Never really saw much point to it.
You've got to learn to enjoy the simple pleasures man ;)

It feels satisfying to read that "Vyper grew to level 100"! It feels a bit more shallow if it is merely: "RAYQUAZA grew to level 100!".

I don't know, I just like making the pokemon I use "mine". A waste of time? Maybe but then again all gaming is a waste of time in the grand scheme of things. I figure if I'm already starting to feel some emotion for this Cyndaquil, I might as well give it a name. Its like having a pet almost, except it isn't real. Once you give it a name, you get really attached to it.

When I am going to use them, yes. I ususally make it a reference.

Like I once named an Electrode "Ragequit", because I once said "So he gets mad, explodes, and leaves? Sounds like a typical angry person online."

Or I always name a Snorlax after my father, because when I was little, my mom once said "That Pokemon looks a lot like your father."

The nicknames I give usually have something to do with the Pokémon (like FireBadger for Typhlosion) but the first legendary I catch is always subsequently called "Gary", in memory of my hat.

...I'm not crazy!

I've only done it a few times for friends but it only happens when I think it will make them laugh, which worked quite well with a Togepi (sp?) named Scrambles that would use explosion as it's first move every time.
