So prompted by a reply to a recent post of mine in which I dissed story-based games and the respondent stated:

"...story based [gaming]... is what the majority of the gaming crowd wants, that's why almost every game has a story"

What kind of gamer are you:

1) Gimme game play! A setup/back story's okay, but if I want an absorbing story I'll read a book
or
2) Gimme a story! If I'm gonna play for 40 hours I need a plot to follow and a payoff at the end

Story, definitely story.

I enjoyed InFamous more than Prototype, and I have at least 5 Playthroughs on Dragon Age: Origins. I'm all for the story.

Both should be an option.

Two of my favorite games that I got last year were Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Darksiders.

Enslaved had crap gameplay but an amazing story.

Darksiders had crap story but fantastic gameplay.

I can respect either.

I'd say gameplay. A lot of really good game universes are expanded upon using novels and the like, and the games focus on having coherent and intuitive gameplay. A few examples of this are the Halo franchise and the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Those both had novels, FFVII had a movie, and they both are masterpieces when you consider the entire franchise.

Story.

That's why I toughed through Deadly Premonition. That game played like shit, but damn that story was interesting.

Why OR?

EDIT: this question was OK to ask back when they first got the gameplay down, usually because of tech limitations, but it's not the case anymore.

Today you can build almost anything (tech wise) so I don't see why the story still has to suffer...

Because that forces you to make a choice and choose which is more important (I assume).

I'd go with story. Good game play is nice, but its not enough to make me care about anything, while a good story can keep me going threw shit or something samey.

One of the reasons i'll probably enjoy TOR and GW2 over something like rift or wow. I don't really care how I kill something, but more of the over arching story beyond it. But for me, combat itself I don't find interesting. It's the broader conflict that keeps me playing.

Always a fun question. Imo a game starts with gameplay. There could be a story, but in can do without. It cannot do without gameplay.

Of course a combination of the two would be best. For example Phoenix Wright is pretty much the perfect game, the story is terrific as is the gameplay.

Both!

One can't have a good game without good gameplay (see Turning Point: Fall of Liberty), but without a story, games are boring and feel pointless (Call of Duty).

Gameplay. I've been playing Portal 2 and Mass Effect this month - both great experiences, but not really exceptional for actual gameplay a lot of time. Games with poor stories but great gameplay tend to have more replay value I find.

i have to say i love your title

OT : hmm its a difficult one, a game is supposed to be played, if it has a good story but bad gameplay then i think it should be classed as a bad game i guess, and this trend where games have to have these serious stories because its required to be "good" is quite stupid aswell

I'm not a very skilled person when it comes to coordination. Gameplay, to me, equals "test of skill". Hence, story.

Preferably both, but no matter how amazing the story is, I'm not going to go through hours of boring gameplay to find out what happens next. I'd rather watch a movie in that case.
