With only a few days to go until Skyrim comes out I couldn't help but going back to Oblivion to finish off some quests. Especially the main one, which even though I've clocked hundreds of hours playtime i still haven't gotten round to completing.

Only in the land of the Elder Scrolls could you justify not completing the main game with there being so much to do off the beaten track so I'm wondering what I'll do with Skyrim's especially with almost all of the hype and promotion being focused upon it.

So Escapists, have you completed Oblivion's main quest and how long did it take you to get around to it?

I'm going to stay away from the main quest for 1 single reason.

Until I know I can continue to play after the main quest is done, like Oblivion, I won't touch it.
I hate to finish the game, like Fallout New Vegas, and notice I still have half a questlog.

Oblivion's main quest was bad for so many different reasons, after finishing it once I never did it again.

I didn't like Fallout 3's main quest either, so I'm not expecting much from Skyrim's main quest.

Om nom nom, tasty poll.

On topic however, when it comes to sandbox games the main story tends to take a back seat to all the exploring, dungeon crawling, thievery and assassination. For the longest time I forgot that Oblivion had a main story, I still had the quest to take the amulet of kings to Jauffre while I was the head of two guilds and at least level 15.

Never finished Oblivion's main story, despite the hundreds of hours I've dumped into that game. I got too distracted, I guess. I'm not too bothered, and I don't exactly have the time to complete the story before Skyrim, due to exams and the like. I mean, with any other sequel, I'd be pretty anal about having finished the previous game in its entirety first. As for Skyrim, I'll have to wait and see, but I'll probably get distracted by everything else in the game as usual.

I actually bring the amulet to Jauffre and then leave the quest line.

This. Then I set out to do other stuff.

I completed it 100% (According to my achievements anyway.) in a whopping 232 hours across all savefiles :p

Oh and you can play after you completed the main quest. Some characters won't be there due to the questline flow. But everything is still playable.

Just to be clear here, this is referring to Oblivion right?
I'm hoping this will be the case for Skyrim as well.

Aye. After you the to and he , people , and then happen, then you can just pad on. It's not like the game says "oh you completed it? Well F you then! YOU CAN'T PLAY ANYMORE!"

Well probably you can, bethesda made sure it happens in Morrowind as well. It's not like it just stops. That would be weird.

Yes and two days I believe. I did Morrowind first and was psyched to see what they had come up with. Then the non-interactive cutscene plays out for ten seconds and I am utterly disappointed.

Might I introduce you to Vanilla Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas.
They did just that.
Once you finish the main story, it's game over.
You couldn't go back to finish any quests, and that really mad me scared to do the main quest.

I had that about 25 hours in. I noticed the questline was a tad short so I ditched it when the 'neccesary' was done to get Martin to safety. It.. doesn't always make sense if you wait months before going to a city that is -under attack right now- ya know :p

Never got to play very far with those games. I did complete Fallout 3 though... I can't remember nto beeing able to run about after that. Main story was pretty short all in all. Havn't completed (or started x.x) Vegas at all yet.

To busy with getting Dark souls on 100% (I should be about 70% now. Just a few more achieves to go.) and then Arkham City.. Followed by Skyrim on the 11th x.x ho god.

I always 'completed' the main quest at level one - for a given level of completed, of course. I just head to Kvatch, close the gate, clear the castle of Daedra, and then crucially do not speak to Martin. Then the only Oblivion gate in Cyrodiil is closed, all the Daedra are driven from the land, and no more gates open up. "Find my son, and close shut the jaws of Oblivion"? More like "Stay the hell away from my son, and close shut the jaws of Oblivion".

So yeah, I never really bother with the main quest most of the time. My first Skyrim character will complete the main quest, but I have a feeling that my second, third and fourth won't.

Well I'll have to watch the wikia and getting the guide....might be better to hold off on the main quest and maybe the guilds...

Also I want to see and meet the Imperial Legion and Stormcloak Rebels and determine who is actually working for the good of the people...

Going to need an armory too...for dragonslaying...

I did Oblivions main storyline...it was alright...still need to do it again before release tho!

Nope. I liked world plagued by demon gates. :)

Oblivion's main quest was OK, but I didn't finish it until I was getting bored with the game; which took a really, really, long time. But the Thieves guild and the Dark Brotherhood quest lines were the best part of the game for me. After I closed the first Oblivion gate and got ol' dude to his fort I dropped the main quest and did those two quest lines instead. If Skyrim has those two in it again, I'll be hopping on those as soon as possible.

I didn't care much about the main questline. In Oblivion and the two recent Fallout games, I'd leave as much of the main quest for later as possible, instead just focusing on side quests and exploration, and deciding to go after the main quests when I feel I've seen everything there is to see. I expect it'll be the same with Skyrim.

Guides are lame in my opinion, they tell waaaaaaay to much of the fun parts :3
I prefer to walk around inthe world and figure it out for myself. . . On 200% difficulty. Yes I'm that much of a machosist :V

But I rarely follow the mainquest straight from from A to Z. It's more a... opportunity thing. If I happen to come across the place I do it, otherwise I'll be distracted by other things. Like killing Rats for the Fighters Guild. (Yes I call that the first assignment for the fighers guild will involve rats (again). )

I would have cared a lot more for Oblivion's main quest, if *I* were the heir to the throne and not his babysitter.
